Wolverine & the X-Men vol. 6 Graphic Novel Review

This volume of Wolverine and the X-men was a great one. For those that don't know this is the X-men book about the Jean Grey school for mutants and its faculty and staff, with Wolverine as the headmaster. Its very much like a Marvel Hogwarts except in this book the Dumbledore is the best there is at what he does, and what he does is not very nice.

In this volume we see Wolverine take some of the problem children in the school to the Savage Land, a jungle filled with dinosaurs, for a special class. On the ride over there Wolverine gives each student some advice on what it will take for them to be their best, this advice is touching in some parts and hilarious in others. What makes this story so good is that we get to see Wolverine fully embrace the idea of being a teacher, that's right the character that has spent the last thirty plus years being the ultimate in mutant loner bad ass now has to teach his students how to be team players. For any of the old school Cyclops fans out there the irony in this is as delicious as a Krispy Kreme donut when the hot light is on. Like Charles Xavier said in the very first issue of this comic, Wolverine doesn't get to be the "cool guy" anymore.

Of course since this is still an X-men book a character from Wolverine's past shows up and mucks up the special lesson, but this character acts as an opportunity to find out more about Wolvie's past and we get a glimpse as to how the X-men and by extension his students are now his family. Plus with the stakes getting higher he doesn't have the luxury of failing them. The last issue of this volume is great as it gives us a glimpse into the future the characters are fighting for and this is a great way to foreshadow some of the things that Jason Aaron and Ramon Perez have in store for us. I for one am very excited for these upcoming events and if you take my recommendation to read this book I suspect you will be too.
