Dr. Who 50th Anniversary Review

No More

Hello Sweeties! A wee bit late, but my 4yo and I finally got to see the Doctor Who 50th Special! It was FANTASTIC! There’s just so much story and action going on, you don’t realize how long it is! Anything below this picture will indeed be SPOILERS ;-)

Where to begin??? There are just a few things that really bothered me about the special. HOW did they escape Tanzalore?! They just started like nothing had happened. And how did Clara not know that was Tom Baker at the end? She has seen all of The Doctor’s faces before!

Other than that it was amazing! THIRTEEN Doctors and TARDIS’s in one special…..what’s not to love? Being able to see 10 and 11 together just made you realize how alike they are, and how much they have changed since John Hurt’s time. There are so many small things you can easily miss the first go’round. Some of the obvious: Tom Bakers famous scarf, Captain Jacks Vortex Manipulator, and the wall of past companions, no one was forgotten in this special. And of course “Rose Tyler” is back. But it’s not really her, she is just the interface for The Moment.  She also keeps referring to herself as “Bad Wolf” which is seen a lot during 10 and Rose's time together. Is this why Bad Wolf kept appearing throughout history, to jog The Doctors memory? Was John Hurt the only one that could see her? I’ve seen some talk around that many believe Clara could also see her.

Will we ever find out how many regeneration’s The Doctor has left, and how Tom Baker came back in the end? Maybe not, but it gives us hope that Doctor Who will be around for another 50 years. So was it all along Gallifrey lived……….or did The Doctor(s) really change their history? There’s quite a bit of discussion about this on the net. It does make sense that Gallifrey had always survived, as it explains how the Daleks keep coming back……they never got destroyed in the Time War. It makes my heart happy thinking that they realized they could do good, and save Gallifrey and change their History. Hopefully Moffett will expand on this a bit more. Regardless, it closed a lot of questions for Whovians while celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who! And of course……

Now the countdown until the Xmas special shall begin! ALLONSY!

Gamer Corner: Alexander

Welcome to this week's installment of Gamer Corner, where Fangirl Review interviews a gamer and gets his thoughts on the gaming world and learn what he is enjoying at the moment.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

Born in Seattle, raised in Belize and now I live in Austin.. PlayStation for eva’, but I love emulation...stuck on retro MEGA MAN FOR LIFE!!!

What rig do you currently game on?

PS3 right now, but due to disc drive problems, I'm on emulations for the time being.

What game are you currently playing right now?

On the PS3 Metal Gear Rising...then its Metal Gear3 and Metal Gear Peace Walker...I want to beat them before I jam the MG V.

Do you enjoy that game, why? How’s the overall game play?

It’s pretty fast but the overall game play is fantastic, I hope they continue with this series

Would you recommend it?

To any and all Metal Gear fans, I would serious consider at least trying this installment to Metal Gear franchise

Are there any games coming out that you are looking forward to?

I've been waiting on a new Mega Man “I'm tired of holding my breath” so Mighty No. 9 it is and Metal Gear V

What kind of gamer do you classify yourself to be? ie. PC, Console, Tabletop, LARP as well as Hardcore, RPG, etc.

Console gaming pretty much, I prefer RPG over Shooters

So with the new consoles coming out, which way are you leaning One or 4? (Ignore if you are a PC gamer)

I've never had an Xbox...no reason why(not knockin’ it) just always had a PlayStation

What are your thoughts on the gaming industry?

Just like everything else, industries are putting quantity over quality...I remember playing the original Zelda Wind Waker in grade school. It blew my mind how they got such 2D graphics on that little screen.(I always stole my items from that shop, he ends up calling you thief). Nowadays gamers get little time to enjoy the games they got. Very few games tend to replayed after been beaten.

If you had the power, what direction would you have the gaming industry go?

Control the flow rate that games get released into public...gamers need to enjoy the games they got before upgrading them

10 years from now, where do you see the industry? Are you happy with that direction?

I'm not a big online gamer but I love the concept of playing with fellow gamers worldwide. I think Sony got it with the integration of mobile games…I would love to see more of mobile/console relationships in the future

Favorite Game (can include tabletop) of all time and why?

This is by far the hardest question…(I will let down many Zelda fans) Mega Man X. because of the storyline behind it…how it expanded the limits and boundaries of the Blue Bomber and the people around him…I hope the creator reads this…your work ain’t done by long shot!

Would you like to share your gamer tag and the system so others may add you?

professorink1 for anyone who wants to play me in Marvel vs Capcom3, in the polite words of Jet Li “If there any other challengers bring them up!”

Thank you to Alexander for a great interview. If you would like to be interviewed for Gamer Corner please contact me at fangirlcontact@gmail.com

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Movie Review

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends such as Gale (Liam Hemsworth), embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Quarter Quell is a special game that occurs every 25 years. In this Quarter Quell the reaping will come from the pool of victors causing Katniss and Peeta to have to compete again. Effie (Elizabeth Banks) and Haymitch (Woody Harelson) work together to keep Katniss and Peeta alive during the tour and the new Hunger Games. It is necessary to see the first movie to understand the series, sorry.

My Thoughts:

My one pet peeve of this series is that no one looks like they are starving. The audience that has not read the books do not quite grasp how important food is to the districts. People are literally dying in the streets from hunger. Also I noticed that the full explanation of what happened to District 13 is not really explained. It is mentioned briefly that it no longer exists but not what happened to it or that people believe it still exists and it is a place to escape from the influence of the Capitol.

Katniss pulls the typical yo-yo between Peeta and Gale which leaves the audience wanting to scream at her to stop doing what she is doing. She continues to make poor decisions that hurt those around her throughout the whole movie. Just once I want a young adult female lead that is strong from beginning to end and does not whine too much.

Lawrence does pull of Katniss’s stubborn disposition quite well throughout the movie. She also does a fantastic job when she visits District 11, the home of Rue. She tears up and a riot breaks out resulting in an old man being shot execution style in front of the crowd. It is heartbreaking to see but it did not make you cry like the Best Man Holiday, or maybe I just did not have any tears left because of that movie.

The arena is well done and puts the tributes through their paces. They die off quick and in fun ways and are forced to face some bad obstacles to survive. When watching the movie you always question if you could survive in this matter if you were forced. I want to say I would do what it takes but I guess when the day comes that is the only way to truly know. Some great twists and turns and allegiances are made known in the arena.

This movie ends with a cliff hanger and you are left wondering what exactly will happen next. It looks like the next installment of the series Hungers Games: Mockingjay will be broken up into two parts and with the first hitting theaters in November 2014. I look forward to the next installment.

Xbox One: My Impressions

Disclaimer: Please note the title. These are my impressions and opinions. If you agree with my past reviews then trust me when I say that Xbox One is a great new console. They took everything that was great with Xbox 360 and made it better.

(Yes that is a trash bag, My coworkers made me do it to so we did not get robbed)

Kinect:

I know there are many people that complain about the Kinect being bundled with the console. Listen, the Kinect is a great, innovative device that you can use in a plethora of ways. The voice commands are finally refined from the previous Kinect. I no longer have to scream at the Kinect to get it to do anything. The ability to switch from hand controls to voice controls is seemless. I had no problems with switching back and forth from the TV and this makes Kinect the best TV remote on the planet. Also the Kinect reads you when you walk into the room and signs you in accordingly. It has read me standing up or sitting down with no problems.

(Some basic commands for the Kinect)

Blu Ray:

Xbox finally has a blu ray player. You can now watch Blu Rays! I know everyone is happy. Xbox put their bet on HD movies which sadly did not pan out. So Sony no longer can hold that over Xbox’s head. It was getting annoying when people say well I bought my Playstation because it had a blu ray. *blank stare* Now people can no longer use that as an excuse; the lame excuse that it was.

(SmartGlass Avatar Dashboard)
SmartGlass:

At first I must admit I did roll my eyes at the SmartGlass concept but it has grown on me. I realized that I only had the SmartGlass app for Xbox 360 on my phone instead of the one for Xbox One so do not make the same mistake. Once I had the correct app I was surprised to see the ease that I was able to interact with my Xbox. So you essentially have three ways to interact with the console, controller, Kinect, and Smartglass.

Specs:

Yeah, so I am not going to get into all the technical specs. You can look those up if you want to know all the details. It runs great, it is quiet, and it looks great. That is all that really matters in the end right?

Live/Friends:

Remember your password people! You get to keep your name and interact across consoles! You now have the ability to have followers and the only way to establish a friendship is to have a two way follow. Keep that in mind.

(My mind was blown with the game being on the left. I have made the mistake of trying to put the game away on the right a few times already)

Games:

I purchased Forza Motorspot 5 to see how the controls are and the visual effects. I also purchased Zumba Fitness: World Party in order to really put the Kinect through its paces.

(Real People!)

Zumba Fitness: World Party – First Impression

The game is the newest installment in the Zumba library. This time around there are real people doing the dances. It was creepy at first to have this real person staring at me but it was nice to see the real body movements for the moves. The Kinect worked well with recognizing my body and dinged me when I was not giving it my all. The calorie burn count worked correctly the first time around. This is essential when you enjoy working out like I do and need to keep your calorie count. The new aspect of this game is that you have to do a World Tour to unlock the songs and receive post cards. Each area of the world has a few songs that you have to perform in order to unlock that area. I scrolled through the song selection available and it was well diverse. I also noticed that there are more songs in English. Overall an enjoyable game that I recommend for an easy work out at home.

(I often find myself losing my side mirror a lot)
Forza Motorsport 5 – First Impression

This is my first Forza game. I have always been a Need for Speed kind of girl so it was interesting to play this game. I must admit that I like tricking out one car and boosting it to the extreme and yes there is a pink accent on my car. #dontjudgeme I personally enjoy the third person point of view when playing a racing game but I find that in this game, I am at my best using a 2ndperson/cockpit point of view. I find that I am better in control of the car and the handles are smoother. I am not sure if this is true for everyone. I was a little put off that I had to complete a whole tour before I could go back to my garage and use all the credits I earned. I am still trying to figure the game out and how to work everything but so far I am enjoying it. The visuals are great and I do find myself sucked into the car and feeling like I am there and that is the true test of a racing game. S/N – I drive like I do in real life, with minimal breaking. I prefer to just let go of the gas when necessary and go from there and I find that this is the most effective way of playing. It is a good overall game I just wish there were more “fun” parts to it. I am sure as I get more chances to play with friends I will enjoy it more.

Overall:

It is a great system that is more than just a gaming console but also a one stop entertainment unit. The ability to access your movie and music apps as well as your actual cable is a great feature. The ease of use with the SmartGlass is amazing and they made what was already ready good about the Kinect even better. If you have the money buy it, keep in mind that to date it is not backwards compatible but I have heard whisperings that there may be software update to allow this so we shall see. If you do not have the money or buying it for a child that does not contribute to the household I would recommend passing at this time. Be financially responsible; the 499.99 price tag is steep.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Sleepy Hollow Season 1, Ep. 9 “Sanctuary” Review

Show starts with a rich girl in a town car. She has inherited a house in Sleepy Hollow. The bodyguard tries to be smart and warns her not to go into the house. She ends up being surrounded by branches and pulled into a closet. Crane starts his fussing about Thanksgiving and how we have it all wrong.

The case of the missing heiress is bounced to Abbie and Crane. They arrive to Frederick’s manor and find the abandoned car. Flashback of Crane and Katrina visiting the manor in the past. The house was a sanctuary for all. Crane and Abbie walk into the manor and find the bodyguard dead. The house starts to close all exits and they become trapped. Abbie is freaking out about being in a haunted house. They find Katriina’s favorite book with a letter from Crane to Katrina.

Crane says that the sancturary may have been changed to a demonic prison. They continue to search the house. They find the missing woman in the closet but at the same time there is tree coming to life and is making its way towards the house. Jenny shows up to see the captain in order to return guns. Jenny invited the captain for Thanksgiving dinner. They believe that Frederick was a warlock and that something bad happened to Katrina in that house when she went to seek sanctuary. The tree creature has broken into the house. Crane and Abbie get split up and Abbie sees a ghost of a woman that used to help with the manor. Jenny is confronted by the captain’s daughter Macy who is in a wheelchair. They seem to get along and bond quickly. The captain’s ex threatens to file for full custody if he does not step up. Abbie is in a flashback and sees Katrina is giving birth. She gives birth to a baby boy.

The creature took Gilbert. Abbie tells Crane that she saw Katrina giving birth. Crane is heartbroken to find that he did not know that Katrina was pregnant. Flashback - something was sent after the baby. The creature killed Frederick. Abbie does not know what happened to the child. They find Gilbert in the basement being held by the creature. Crane finds the roots and Abbie begins to shoot the roots. Flashback of seeing Katrina fleeing with the baby through a secret passage. Crane grabs an axe and goes back after the creature that threatened his son. Crane hacks up the tree creature and becomes covered in its blood. Crane is by himself and does not want to be in the company of others. Ms. Gilbert sends information about the Frederick's and Grace Dixon (helped Katrina give birth) is an ancestor of Abbie. They have always been connected.

My Thoughts:
Poor Crane feels lonely. Yet again Crane and Abbie are wearing their hair the same way, half up, half down, with bangs in the front. Oh no a tree that is alive just like The Lord of the Rings. I have a feeling that this tree is not out to help anyone. I enjoy the conversation between Jenny and the Captain. It seems like there is sexual tension there even if Jenny wants to deny it. I now wonder what happened to the captain’s daughter and how it was probably his fault.

I knew that Crane had a child. I threw out the idea that Abbie is somehow related way back when and I wonder how this child now plays into the whole story line. I wonder at what point in time are we going to learn about what happen to the child and how the child plays a role in the story line.

The Walking Dead Season 4, Ep. 7 “Dead Weight” Review

The governor (Brian) has met up with a member of his old crew, Martinez. He is doing laundry and playing chess with the little girl. His old crew member lets him know that there is no dead weight and that he is in charge. The governor is on a mission with the men to scout out more supplies. They find a body in the woods with its head cut off and a message, “liar”. A gift from Michonne? Another body found with the message, “rapist”. Another body with a message, “murderer”. They find the cabin that they are looking for. The group searches the cabin for the walker that they are able to hear. They kill the zombie but find more and zombie heads. One of the zombie turns out to be a kid which messes with the governor’s head.

The group is talking about the old place, Woodbury. Brian just wants to move on. He is playing house a little too well with that family. Martinez has a drunken heart to heart with Brian. The governor snaps and hits Martinez in the head after he says that he thinks he might not be able to keep them safe. The governor feeds Martinez to the walkers screaming the whole time that he does not want it. He is referencing the responsibility of being in charge. This is after Martinez suggests they share responsibility of keeping the group safe.

The group has a new leader, Pete, who then asks the Governor for his help. The team is out scouting and finds another camp. Pete says no to robbing the other camp. They arrive to find the camp they just saw has been killed. The governor comes in and tells the women to pack up and its time to leave because the camp is no longer safe. They are on the road and run into a horde of zombies that are stuck in the mud. The governor goes back to the camp and kills Pete. The Governor meets with Mitch and lets him know that Pete is dead. The Governor lets Mitch know that he is taking over the camp and they will do what is necessary to survive.

The Governor is officially in charge with Mitch and they are really working to make the camp safe. The little girl ends up being attacked by a walker but survives because of the Governor. The governor is driving around and gets out the car to take a walk and finds the prison. He sees Rick and Carl farming. He also sees Michonne and Hershel in the woods. The actual fight for the prison will be next week.

My Thoughts: Last week’s episode was a pointless CW-like filler episode. Frankly they should have combined this episode with last week’s. I know people were like, “oh it gave more depth to the Governor”. Sorry but no it gave them an extra episode to pack in the ratings. The Governor is a killer and a rapist and they are trying to make him more important than what he is should be just like Shane. He served his purpose and should be gone by now but instead they are holding on to his character longer than necessary. Finally we get the fight for the prison that will leave a lot of people dead. Maybe now we will get rid of some of the dead weight in the cast.

Colored Controllers: Gaming Gear

Hello Everyone,

I would like to introduce everyone to an awesome company called Colored Controllers. I stumbled across them on Instagram and I was instantly a fan. If you like to have your rig and accessories customized this is the company for you. Check out the interview below.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your company?

Growing up my friends and I were always taking things apart to see how they worked. I was always browsing the Xbox-scene forums and noticed that people were painting their systems. I didn't have an Xbox at the time (it was still pretty new, and I was pretty young) so I somehow convinced my friend to let me borrow his. He hesitantly obliged, so I cracked that thing open and threw some paint and LEDs on it. Fast forward to now and I'm still painting video game hardware. My close friends were by my side learning the painting process right along with me. We always take our custom stuff out when we play in tournaments and over at friends' houses. We decided there was enough interest so we might as well try and make something out of this!

What made you decide to get into your field?

We all want to have a fun job, and usually the best way to do that is to create your own. We are obviously a new company, but would love to have some sort of involvement in the gaming community. None of us are developers or anything like that, so we wanted to find a way to make our interests and hobbies work within the world of gaming. We aren't just some guys out there to make a quick buck. We are die hard gamers who are camping out at midnight releases, reading gaming sites, and putting hours on our consoles.

What are your thoughts on the gaming industry and the direction that it is heading?

It's a really exciting time to be a gamer. There hasn't been a new major console released in nearly eight years (aside from the Wii-U). Next gen is finally here and I'm excited to see all of the new technology that's coming out. Things like the Ouya are a huge step forward in terms of what I dreamed of as a kid growing up. On top of that it's an excellent time to be an Independent developer. Crowd funding sites and Steam Greenlight mean that indie devs no longer have to rely on huge studios to release their games. The more games the better!

If you had the power, what direction would you have the gaming industry go?

I'd love to see less online passes and more new IP's. I feel like these days people are too concerned about playing it safe and making tons of sequels that they know will net them some sales. There's a reason why games like The Last of Us are such a huge hit. Gamers want new characters and story lines but with the way the industry has been shutting down studios left and right it's hard for them to take risks and try something new. You always hear about how the gaming industry has surpassed the movie industry in terms of profits but don't see studios putting that money towards new AAA titles too often.

What is your favorite Video Game and Why?

I really like the game Shenmue from Sega Dreamcast. Something about that game really roped me in. It's a shame they only made two of them and left the second one at such a cliffhanger. I remember the first time I played it, the world felt so alive. The environments and the music in that game is so well done. I'll occasionally throw the soundtrack on as I'm going to sleep, it's so peaceful.

Book Review: Dr. Sleep

Amazon Overview:

Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon.

My Thoughts:

This is my first Stephen King book I have ever read. I was scrolling through the new books and was about to pass this one by until I realized that it was the sequel to The Shinning. I loved the concept of that movie even though I never got a chance to read the book. I figured I would make my book club read this book and see how it goes.

I must admit the book did drag at points but I understand that King can get lost in his descriptions but as I have read books with more description than this one, it feels as though it was not that bad. It dragged because the story took too long to develop. It was great to see little Danny all grown up and see how the behaviors of his father affected him so deeply and how he had to combat that. I enjoyed the growth of this character throughout the book and how he was willing to save another kid with the Shinning like his friend Dick did. The book truly did not pick up until the last 60 pages of an over 400 page book. I wish there was more action or at least more scary. I was not afraid for the characters and I did not feel my typical connection to the characters. This is concerning because I usually connect quite well with characters of a book.

There are a couple of great revelations but again they do not occur until the last 60 pages. It is a must read as you need to know what happens after the The Shinning but I would recommend waiting until it goes on sale or at the local library because the book is lacking and feels forced. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.
