Movie Mondays: After Earth

Random Movie Mondays is back and I had the chance to check out the movie After Earth.

Story Line: A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape. With Cyper critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

My Thoughts: I heard this movie received a lot of negative reviews. I can understand why. Jaden was overboard with the emotional teenager routine. I understand that his sister was killed right in front of him but he takes it so far that he becomes whiny and annoying. As a viewer there were points in time when you want to yell at him to calm down or just die already.

Then you have Will's character. I understand that Cypher was a huge deal but his lack of emotion when dealing with his son was over the top. He needed to have more emotion especially when his son almost died from a toxin. In the attempt to make the character stoic, they made him emotionless and hard to identify with.

The movie did fall flat but it is not as bad as the critics made it out to be. There were interesting moments that makes the viewer able to see that there was a potentially decent movie under the mistakes. I would recommend you see it and share your thoughts in the comments. Let me know if you think it was horrible or not as bad as the critics said it was.
