Gamer Corner: Clinton

Welcome to this week's installment of Gamer Corner, where Fangirl Review interviews a gamer and gets his thoughts on the gaming world and learning what he is enjoying at the moment.

Tell me a little bit about yourself? What rig do you currently game on? What kind of gamer do you classify yourself to be? ie. PC, Console, Tabletop, LARP as well as Hardcore, RPG, etc.

Well, I am 29 years old, married, and have an awesome dog! I am a full time geek and very proud of it. I currently do most of my gaming on my PS4, but I also play a lot of online games on my laptop (looking to upgrade to a gaming PC soon). Because I love all types of games, including tabletop RPG and board games, I’d call myself hardcore. Gaming is always my first choice of entertainment.

What is your first memory of gaming?

When I was about 5 or so, I watched my older cousin playing Super Mario Bros. on NES. He was so good at it! I was hooked. I’ve owned every console since. This probably also explains why I love watching Let’s Plays so much…

What game are you currently playing right now? Do you enjoy that game, why? How’s the overall game play and graphics?

I am currently switching between Don’t Starve Console Edition, a horror survival, resource gathering game by Klei Entertainment and Solstice Arena a MOBA that was ported to PC from IOS. I love them both so much. They are a great balance of casual and strategy. The gameplay on both is simple and fun. My wife and I love playing Don’t Starve together. As for graphics, I’ve never played a game as awesomely animated as Don’t Starve, it’s a unique style that I love, it pushes gaming as an art form and I believe we owe our support to Klei Entertainment for making a game like this. Solstice Arena is great as well, nothing revolutionary, but really clean and fluid, which is a big plus.

Would you recommend it, why?

I’d recommend both games! Until PS4 game releases start coming at a more regular pace, it’s going to be crucial for us gamers to supplement our hobby with free-to-plays and other system options. In addition, they’re both tons of fun which is the most important part, right?

Are there any games coming out that you are looking forward to?

I cannot wait for Thief...I’ve watched so much coverage on this game it’s ridiculous. The next Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls MMO are also high on my list. But honestly, I’m pretty much pumped for every game to come to PS4....I should probably get a handle on that before I go bankrupt from buying games this year.

If you could design your own game what would it be like?

Oh my goodness…if I were in charge of a game it would probably never get to development because it would be too big. I love open world gameplay where your actions greatly affect the world around you. I’d love a really good Norse/Viking themed game. Something along the lines of Skyrim with more Norse influences.

Thoughts on this new generation of consoles – Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One?

First of all, I love console gaming. If I had enough money, I’d own every console the moment it was released. That being said, I am worried for the industry as a whole. Advances like Kinect and Move are great, but sometimes it feels like these gimmicks are encroaching on the controller world. Maybe I am being paranoid or short sighted, but I don’t envision myself ever in a position where I’d rather put down the controller and stand in front of a camera pretending to hack enemies with a sword.

What are your thoughts on the gaming industry?

Haha, well, a little bit of my thoughts are above, but to be a little more optimistic; I have great faith in the industry. Ouya, Oculus Rift, the Steam Machine…these guys are making sure that the industry does not stagnate and go the way of VHS and eight tracks. I also think it’s very important to support indie developers. If you want the industry to carry on and advance, you’ve got to give some love to small designers and developers. They are the ones introducing new mechanics and artwork and really exploring what it is to be a human being interacting with a virtual reality…or other human beings virtually.

10 years from now, where do you see the industry? Are you happy with that direction? If you had the power, what direction would you have the gaming industry go?

Well, I hope to see the industry progress into something along the lines of whole life integration, if that makes sense. I would love to be walking down the street with my glasses on and have the option to view some form of augmented reality where I could interact with friends in a real life, open world game. I know that makes me sound a bit crazy, but I think it is the way the industry should head. Obviously, the number of problems and questions this would create are infinite, but with technology outpacing our own progression, I think it’s inevitable.

Favorite Game (can include tabletop) of all time and why?

Anything from the Final Fantasy series. Particularly Final Fantasy Tactics. Those are the games that made me realize how much I love RPGs. Plus, they have such wonderful worlds and stories. What’s not to love?
