Nintendo Wins Patent Case Brought against Mii Characters

Judge Finds Patent Claim Invalid

Nintendo has prevailed in a patent case in Seattle federal court concerning the company’s Mii characters. Judge Richard A. Jones found that U.S. Patent No. 8,005,303, which relates to ways of storing police sketch-artist data, was invalid. RecogniCorp LLC, a patent-assertion company, filed this case in 2011, claiming that the Mii characters used on Nintendo’s systems, including Wii U, Wii and Nintendo 3DS, infringed the patent.

Judge Jones held that the patent was an improper attempt to monopolize mathematical operations, which cannot be patented. The Judge therefore did not need to rule directly on Nintendo’s non-infringement arguments. “We are very pleased with Judge Jones’ decision, which finally put an end to RecogniCorp’s attempt to cover inventions to which it has no rights,” said Ajay Singh, Nintendo of America’s Director of Litigation and Compliance. “Nintendo will continue to protect its products and innovations against accusations of patent infringement.”

CULLEN BUNN DISCOVERS “REMAINS” IN “DEATH FOLLOWS”

THE DEVIL HAS COME TO CALL . . .

This spring Dark Horse Books is pleased to offer a graphic novel collecting never-before-printed material from Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, The Sixth Gun) in Death Follows! Originally debuting digitally through Monkeybrain as The Remains, Death Follows is horrifically and beautifully realized by A. C. Zamudio and Carlos Nicolas Zamudio. The print collection contains the original prose story by Cullen Bunn and a new cover by Simon Bisley.

“Death Follows is the darkest story I’ve written. It’s a supernatural horror tale set in rural North Carolina, the story of a mysterious farmhand who shows up at a struggling farm looking for work—and brings a nightmarish cycle of events with him,” remarked Bunn. “It starts with a simple (if somewhat strange) line: ‘The dead rats danced the day the hired man came around.’”

Birdie, her sister, their pregnant mother, and their frail father all live together on a struggling farm. When an itinerant farmhand named Cole comes to their aid, the children should be relieved. Instead, they find their lives spiraling into nightmare, as Cole regards Birdie’s sister with menacing desire. To make matters much worse, wherever he goes, the dead grow restless. As the horror threatens to consume her home and her family, Birdie is haunted by a chilling warning: Some secrets are meant only for the dead.

“The mystery and dread build to a horrific conclusion. It’s the stuff of nightmares, to be sure. I think readers ofHarrow County will absolutely love this book,” added Bunn.

Death Follows is in stores May 25, 2016. Preorder your copy today at your local comic shop or through these fine retailers:

BITCH PLANET RETURNS IN FORCE

Issue #6 is a stand-alone before the new arc begins, featuring art by Taki Soma. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick (PRETTY DEADLY, Captain Marvel) and special guest artist Taki Soma (SINERGY, Rapture) will launch a special stand-alone issue in the ongoing bitingly satirical series BITCH PLANET this January. Previously in BITCH PLANET, a new crop of non-compliants settled in for their stay on the Auxiliary Compliance Outpost. When a small group was offered a chance to earn their freedom, they took it, knowing the odds would be stacked against them at every turn.

In BITCH PLANET #6, Meiko Maki’s past is uncovered: how she went from promising engineer to killer—and the ace up her sleeve.

“I’ve wanted to work with Taki since we met, and Val and I were so pleased when she agreed to take on Bitch Planet,” said DeConnick. “Her art style matches Meiko’s personality, I think. There’s a vulnerability to it, an honesty, buffered with a sense of humor—which I think is critical for this title. And that’s not an easy thing to balance. Val makes it look effortless, but it’s not. Taki was able to step into our world and meld beautifully, and at the same time, entirely be herself.”

She added, "After lengthy discussions between ourselves, we’ve decided to run this issue with the followingcontent advisory: 'The following is a flashback issue, covering the events that lead to Meiko Maki's incarceration. It contains plot elements and images relating to sexual assault. The creators encourage you to evaluate your comfort level before deciding to proceed. Bitch Planet's main narrative will resume next month with Issue 7. The series recap therein will not recount the assault.’ It’s similar to the tack we’ve taken with racial epithets—these things have to exist in the world of Bitch Planet, we have to talk about them, but we’re trying to figure out a way to do it that isn’t exploitative, that doesn’t contribute to trauma.”

"I gotta say, this has been a dream project,” said Soma. “In this particular issue, you really GET where Meiko Maki comes from in a way that's integral to the overall Bitch Planet title. If that doesn't excite you, let me just say that I feel sad for you and may I suggest that you look into your pet's eyes and hug it a lot."

BITCH PLANET #6 hits stores Wednesday, January 6th.

FOUR EYES BLAZES ON IN NEW STORY ARC

Writer Joe Kelly (I KILL GIANTS, BAD DOG) and artist Max Fiumara will launch a new story arc in their genre-splicing series FOUR EYES from Man of Action this January. Previously in FOUR EYES, readers met Enrico, a young boy in an alternate 1930’s New York. The untimely passing of his father left him the man of the house, a duty he took quite seriously—seriously enough to step into his father’s shoes as a dragon hunter. But though he tried to be a killer, he ended up bringing home a baby dragon.

In FOUR EYES: HEARTS OF FIRE #1, the training begins. “Now that we've set up the players, Max and I really get to dive into the universe and the characters,” said Kelly. “In the first story arc, we fell in love with Enrico and the gothic world he's inhabiting. In Hearts of Fire, we start to see just what effect this world of underground fighting, gangsters, and monsters has on a young boy. This is the beginning of a dark ride for Enrico, Four Eyes and Fawkes...my favorite kind.”

“The world of dragon fighting will be central, and it’s going to hit Enrico really hard,” added Fiumara. “I can't wait to see readers’ hearts broken again!”

FOUR EYES: HEARTS OF FIRE #1 hits stores Wednesday, January 6th.

Dark Horse Comics Announces the First Graphic Novel from Booker Award–Winning Novelist Margaret Atwood

Dark Horse Comics announced today the publication of Angel Catbird, the first graphic novel by Margaret Atwood, the Booker Award–winning author of The Blind Assassin, The Handmaid’s Tale, andThe Heart Goes Last. Angel Catbird is a unique and ambitious collaboration between Atwood and artist Johnnie Christmas (Sheltered) that tells the story of an unusual superhero over the course of three all-ages graphic novels, the first of which will be published by Dark Horse Comics in the fall of 2016. The project is being published in tandem with Keep Cats Safe and Save Bird Lives, an initiative led by Nature Canada, the oldest conservation charity in the country.

“I have concocted a superhero who is part cat, part bird. Due to some spilled genetic Super-Splicer, our hero got tangled up with both a cat and an owl; hence his fur and feathers, and his identity problems,” said Atwood. “Margaret Atwood has created a bold and unforgettable new character, paying homage to both classic pulp heroes and traditional comic book origin stories,” said Mike Richardson, Dark Horse’s publisher and president. “We’re proud to bring Margaret’s Angel Catbird here to Dark Horse, since it is exactly the kind of creator-owned graphic novel we are committed to publishing."

“What should you expect from Angel Catbird? Imagine, if you will, a strange mix of Will Eisner’s The Spirit, Grant Morrison and Chas Truog’s Animal Man, and Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s Squirrel Girl,” said acquiring editor Daniel Chabon. “Angel Catbird is a humorous, action-driven, pulp-inspired story. And the only other thing I can tell you at this early date is to expect a lot of cat puns.” “I wanted to find an artist whose style Margaret liked, and who I felt comfortable working with and who shared the vision for the project,” said consulting editor Hope Nicholson (The Secret Loves of Geek Girls), who brought Angel Catbird to Dark Horse. “Johnnie Christmas is, by all accounts, a perfect fit.”

“It’s tremendously exciting to work with one of the great contemporary novelists,” said Johnnie Christmas. “I can’t wait for readers to experience the world of Angel Catbird that we’re building. It’s got warmth, heart, humor, and lots of action.”

Angel Catbird will be a three-volume series of 6 x 9–inch full-color trade paperbacks priced at $10.99 each. More information about the Angel Catbird graphic novels and Nature Canada’s campaign will be released in 2016.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Game Add-On Content Detailed

Back in October, Xbox and Crystal Dynamics revealed how the single player experience will be extended in Rise of the Tomb Raider and last night at The Game Awards shared a first glimpse at Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, one of the major content packs coming early next year via the Season Pass or as standalone DLC. In addition to Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, fans can also look forward to two other considerable additions to Rise of the Tomb Raider with Endurance Mode (available Dec. 29) and Cold Darkness Awakened (available in 2016) along with a slew of new outfits, weapons and expedition cards to personalize and extend fans experience in the main campaign.

See below for more information on the main content additions available in the Season Pass or as Standalone DLC for both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Endurance Mode – Available December 29th

Alone and in the wild, Lara must scrounge, scavenge, craft and survive the harsh elements by day, as well as lethal threats from enemies, both man and beast, by night. This is her ultimate woman-versus-wild test to push the limits of how long she can survive on her own in sprawling, unforgiving landscapes. Fire takes fuel, cold kills the unprepared, food restores health, but everything must be caught, collected, or crafted. You start with nothing and must find everything. Challenge friends to your longest survival run and battle to the top of the leaderboards for the title of Ultimate Survivor. Includes a new outfit and weapon.

Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch – Available in early 2016

Deep in the wilds of Siberia, there is a forbidden forest that no man will enter, where a Soviet expedition vanished without a trace. Lara enters the Wicked Vale in search of a missing man, but what she finds is a nightmare that she cannot explain. Is the witch, Baba Yaga, truly haunting the forbidden forest? Or is there more to the legend? Featuring hours of new gameplay, this adventure expands the story of the main campaign with Lara facing deadly new adversaries, exploring a new puzzle-filled tomb, and solving a decades old mystery, all culminating in a showdown with an ancient and mythic evil. Includes a new outfit, and a new bow.

Cold Darkness Awakened – Available in 2016

Decommissioned during the Cold War, a dormant weapons research base has been breached, unleashing a mysterious affliction into the Siberian wilds that transforms beasts and men into blood-thirsty, mindless killers. Lara must overcome increasingly dangerous waves of these infected predators while scrounging their equipment and crafting additional gear on the fly, in kill or be killed survival-combat. Fight for your life against new enemies and complete new challenges, while discovering a way to stop or perhaps even reverse this impending catastrophe. Includes a new outfit and weapon.

Super Mario Maker Update Adds Never-Before-Seen Items, Bookmark Web Portal

Use Computers, Tablets and Smartphones to Find Levels and Queue Them up to Play

The courses in Super Mario Maker are about to get even more interesting – and a lot easier to find. A free Dec. 21 update will deliver a new set of never-before-seen items for players to use as they create courses in the Wii U game. On the same day, Nintendo launches a Web portal called Super Mario Maker Bookmark that lets players search for courses to play by using their computer, tablet or smartphone. “Players have already created and shared a huge number of courses, and now it will be easier and more fun than ever for players to create and find levels they will love to play,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Combining classic Mario game play with the creative fun of making and sharing levels, Super Mario Maker is a perfect experience for the holidays.”

New features coming to the game include:
  • Fire Koopa Clown Car: This volcanic vessel is capable of shooting fireballs as well as a powerful charged shot that can even destroy Blocks. It’s perfect for creating shoot-’em-up-style courses.
  • P Warp Doors: Unlike regular Warp Doors, these are only visible while a P Switch is active – perfect for creating truly devious Ghost House courses.
  • Bumper: This bouncy donut-shaped object sends Mario bounding away when touched.
  • World Records: Now pages will display the World Record for each course uploaded, displaying the fastest clear time.
  • Super Mario Maker Bookmark: Levels that players have bookmarked to play later using the Web portal will be accessible from the Course World tab.
Players can access the Super Mario Maker Bookmark portal site from their computer, tablet or smartphone, using their Nintendo Network ID to log in. The portal will let players browse recommended courses or search for courses with filters like difficulty, game theme or course style. Players can also search using a selection of tags, making it easier to find courses that fall into a specific category such as automatic, puzzle or music. Appealing levels can then be bookmarked for instant access the next time players fire up the game. These comprehensive options are also accessible on Wii U via the Course World in Super Mario Maker, allowing players to find a course and hit the Play Now button to jump straight into the action. A link to the new portal site will be available on the game’s website when it launches.

THE PROTECTORS NOW UNFOLDING ON MADEFIRE AND APPLE TV

11-YEAR NFL VETERAN ISRAEL IDONIJE RELEASES COMPLETE STORY ARC

Athlitacomics, the entertainment company started by former Chicago Bear Israel Idonije, is launching The Protectors issues #1-5 as Motion Books on the Madefire app and on Apple TV. Season 1 of The Protectors will roll out as weekly episodes. The release of the 15 episodes will start Wednesday, December 16 and will continue through March 23. The Protectors, created by Idonije, written by Ron Marz, with art by Bart Sears, Mark Pennington, and Neeraj Menon, is a unique melding of sports action and superhero adventure with a very diverse character base. The Protectors issues #0 and #1 first debuted as limited, collectible print editions at C2E2 in Chicago. Issue #0 is already available on Madefire.

“Bringing The Protectors to life and offering the story as Motion Books on Madefire and Apple TV is beyond exciting,” said Idonije, CEO of Athlitacomics. “The limited print introduction of issues #0 and #1 was well received, and we appreciate our fans who have been awaiting the rest of the story. We are thrilled to share the first story arc with the world.” The Protectors is one of two Athlitacomics properties created by Idonije.

"Athlitacomics presents an exceptional example of the power of Motion Books, combining - as they do - the spectacle of sport with super-heroic action! And it's fantastic to see their work on Apple TV, bringing it into the family space - really the ideal place to enjoy their brand of high-octane entertainment for all ages,” said Liam Sharp CCO and Co-Founder, Madefire.

Idonije, who originally conceived the idea of The Protectors during a Bears training camp a few years ago, is a lifelong comic book fan. The Protectors are chosen athletes who learn they are blessed with more than elite athletic ability. Pro football superstar Isaac Chike seems to have the perfect life of success, wealth and fame. But this life is turned upside down when he discovers his true purpose. Isaac learns he is destined to be one of The Protectors, a small group of gifted heroes blessed with miraculous powers. Now Isaac and a handful of other star athletes must choose between the lives they know as star athletes and the greater good of protecting mankind from enemies intent on enslaving the world.

Season 1 will introduce the characters, concepts and conflicts, recount the origin of The Protectors, and take the reader through the first battle with the Dissenters. The series is filled with character-driven drama and extraordinary visuals that appeal to both sports fans and comic enthusiasts.

Spoiler-Free Movie Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

What can be said about the Star Wars series that hasn't already been said. In a nutshell: the original trilogy is made up of cinema classics, the prequel trilogy ... not so much. So where does this J.J. Abrams helmed feature film fit in? In the first or the second bunch? The answer is a resounding FIRST BUNCH!

If you are fan of what made the Episodes IV-V-VI the special treat that they are, then this movie will not let you down. There is high adventure. There are lovable characters. There are old themes of good and evil revisited. There is comedy. And most importantly, it has a heart. JJ Abrams treated Star Wars with the love that only a true fan could.  Was it as great as “The Empire Strikes Back”? No. I doubt any future Star Wars can ever match that movie. But was it in the same league as “A New Hope,” and perhaps even better than “Return of the Jedi”? I wouldn't fault someone for making an argument for either.

I only have a few criticism. The first is with the pacing, the film has 30 years of catching up to do and it does rush through a few bits to get the story moving forward. Let's compare it to“A New Hope,” which despite being is a movie that also starts the story midstream gives us a sense of dread with Darth Vader. In a few short minutes we are able to understand the severity of the rebel war with the Empire without the need of a backstory: Lucas made sure to fill us in on the boring details later in three very long movies. This movie couldn't quite capture that feeling in it's first act. Even the famous opening crawl was a bit dull. It served simply as a “catch us up”, and “this is where we are now,” device instead of making me feel like I was in the middle of a story that had never stopped.

The second criticism is on how much the opening act of the movie relies on fortunate coincidences, and a good dose of “awakening” at the proper time to bring the story together. Again, returning to “A New Hope”. It also relies on the sheer luck of the droids landing on Tatooine to get the plot moving, but the movie then leaves most of the rest to the characters decision, rather than simply being at the right place at the right time. There was simply too much chance in the first act of “The Force Awakens” to make it feel natural. Perhaps there are no “coincidences” when the force is strong, but as a viewer it does seem like a cheap way to get everyone together for the mission at hand. The characters were also much too eager to go off into the adventure, compared to a Han Solo who had to be bribed, or a Lando who changed his mind about Darth Vader after he saw that he was going to lose control of his city, or even Luke who only went with Obi Wan after his whole family was killed. I will give J.J. Abrams credit for at least making some attempts at showing second thoughts, but they were a bit rushed and contrived.

The final criticism, and it's not one that bothered me a lot, but it did stand out, is how the movie rehashes some key plot elements - primarily from Star Wars episode IV and V. New fans may not notice, but old fans will. Again, it wasn't so bothersome because it blended into the story well, and it was like a nod to the old series, but I felt it kept the story from digging into new territory. Say what you will about the prequels, but at least they attempted to create a world very much removed from the original trilogy. Again I will give J.J. credit for managing to keep this movie from going into “Star Trek Into Darkness”/”Wrath of Khan” complete rehash mode.

But these are minor squabbles about a movie that caught enough of my attention at the start, had me settled in by the middle, and by the last act had me hoping it wouldn't end. Star Wars fans fear not, this is the Star Wars movie you have been waiting for for a very long time. Everything down to some of the camera angles, the colour schemes, the characters, is reminiscent of the Star Wars you love. The audience in the theatre even clapped at the end. This was film entertainment the way it should be, light enough to enjoy with the kids but engaging enough to hold your attention as an adult.

Next up, one can only hope that the story takes a darker turn. There are some secrets yet to be uncovered about some of the major characters, and some more evil to be unleashed by an antagonist who seems to only be getting started. But for now, I am excited to watch this movie again.

Fangirl Review Editor’s Thoughts:

Spoilers Ahead! Stop Reading!

I have now had the chance to check out the latest Star Wars movie and wanted to add a few things. This movie does very well in bringing you back into the franchise. I will be honest the best actor of the movie is the droid BB8. This droid makes the movie and frankly you are invested in him. You are happy when he is and sad when he is sad. He truly makes the film great and gives thumbs up to Fin and participates in his lie. Frankly I did not care to see Leia, Han, and everyone else once they made me fall in love with this droid.

The movie has predictable moments and too long staring moments, especially between Rey and Luke at the end. I did not like the set-up of Kylo Ren and it felt rushed in his reveal and then was predictable in killing Han. As soon as you saw Han walk over to Ren you knew he was not walking away, especially once you saw Rey and Fin arrive and watch the confrontation. Overall I am not sure if we should have found Luke in the first movie. I think it should have ended with Rey leaving to find him, it felt like a rushed ending.

The ultimate fight sequence at the end felt like it was stolen from New Hope. Frankly there was too much from this movie that felt like it was stolen from 4,5,6. Overall the movie was good and I am interested in seeing where they go from here. It was a strong beginning and hopefully they will correct some things going into the next one.

Plus I need to know if Fin is Lando’s son. - Vikki
