Movie Review: Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies

After The Oscars it appears Hollywood makes attempts to overload US movie goers with all their tinkering projects that don't fit between the summer blockbusters or the feel good seasonal films prior to years end. This review is about one of those experiments.

PPnZ, is the remake of a popular book (most read as a high school assignment) by Jane Austin. When I saw one of the producers is Natalie Portman a light bulb was lit thinking this is going to be a goof movie! The story takes place in the 19th century, a plague has taken over Europe becoming a war zone against zombies. During this disaster two people with incredible fighting skills Elizabeth Bennet (Lilly James) and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), having differences (class v arrogance) put them aside and join forces to save their bloody stricken country.

The movie had its moments. They did not go with much CGI. The focus was good martial art fight scenes. That was probably what made the movie entertaining because Elizabeth and her 5 sisters were trained to kill zombies. There is a Dance Ball Scene that rocked and from there the movie picks up but not by much! The dialogue was draggy and the plot made no sense. What saved (if you can call a 15 million worldwide bomb saved) was the comedy routines between Elizabeth, her family, and Mr. Darcy. There is one moment where Elizabeth's sister was injured in bed and Mr. Darcy was attempting to determine if she was going to turn into a zombie. Cute movie, with a twist adding Zombies,  However, Hollywood do not sell your audience short. Making a movie and adding Zombies does not always break box office records. However, Natalie Portman being one of the producers makes me think that may not have been the point, after all she starred in 2011 Your Highness and that spoof did well in rental sales and one of the worst movies ever made.
