Game Review: FFXV First Impressions

Game Overview: Is the fifteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. It is an open world action role-playing video game with an action-based real-time battle system. The game takes place in the fictional world of Eos. You play as the main character, Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the Lucian Throne, who goes on a quest to retake his homeland. You are accompanied by your three companions, Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto. You navigate the large world by foot, the party’s car, Regalia, or chocobos (who have the ability to join into fights).

Fangirl Thoughts: I am currently level 43 and on Chapter 6. I was doing a lot of side quests but due to events in Chapter 5 I was forced to play that chapter versus more running around and it looks like I may have to do the same for chapter 6 since there are no more quests or hunts available to me. This is my first Final Fantasy game. I have always watched my brothers play the game but was not interested due to the battle system. Once I heard that the battle system would be action based I decided to give the game a try. I also have been playing more JRPGs lately and figured that it was time to get into one of the iconic RPG games.

The game is visually stunning and even one of the characters, Prompto, enjoys taking pictures that you can save and share on social media. I like that you are friends with everyone in your party and know them well. The game has a lot of the classic RPG aspects such as gaining Experience points-XP but you have to camp or stay at an inn in order for it to be tallied so you can level up. You also gain Ability Points-AP which can be used on the skill tree system.

The game is so fun to play and I have over 40 hours into it. My strategy is to do all the side quests as possible before I advance the storyline but I have come to realize that you will be forced at certain points to advance the storyline so be prepared. I am currently 15 levels over what is needed for the current story.

Each character has personal hobbies that they enjoy that you level up. I enjoy fishing so this game was already a win for me. Noctis continues to grow as an angler. Gladiolus likes to explore and picks up items, Ignis is the cook of the group and is always coming up with recipes that will prepare you for fights with awesome boosts, and Prompto takes pictures.

I was actually talking to a few people about Prompto. He is by far the weakest of the group and always the first to jump in the fight and be on the brink of death. Some players actually just let him die and refuse to waste potion on him which I find hilarious.

Overall I am enjoying the game so far. I do need to improve my finesse in regards to my fighting. I have always been more of a brute fighter so it will be quick and messy but I get the job done. I know I will eventually go up against an enemy that requires strategy but until then I will keep relying on my strength and potions to win the battle.

There are many DLCs to come with the potential online co-op ability. So this game will be played for awhile for me personally.

What are your thoughts on the game thus far?
