My Thoughts:
I truly enjoyed the first two books. I really enjoy young adult overall and when a friend’s daughter suggested the series to me I decided to pick it up about two months ago. I was lucky that I picked up the series just a bit before the last book came out and right before the movie comes out in Summer 2014. I read quickly through the first two books and was eagerly awaiting the last book. I however took more than a week to read the book. I know that you are thinking okay why should I consider that significant? Let me tell you, I read very quickly and usually finish a good 500 page book in two days, three days max. This book felt a little disjointed. The writing style was different from previous books and I found myself trudging through it.
The author set it up so you have two point of views throughout the whole book, Tris and Tobias. Each chapter would flip between their point of views. Frankly it felt a little bit too fanfiction like. Now do not get me wrong, I love fanfiction but to see this set up in the book made the book feel unfinished. At least the point of view switching did not result in an overlapping of the story. Overall one has to question why the author decided to change her writing style completely for the final book. Frankly she should have waited for her next series to try a different style as my coworker pointed out.

Okay so I will not spoil the book for you but I will say that the story line was a little bit annoying for a little while during my read. Roth did do a good job with explaining how the faction system came about and what is outside the world that Tris grew up in. I will admit that there are major twists and turns and you will find yourself tearing up at certain moments. There may be a point where you yell out, “Nooooo!!!” but you will enjoy the development of the characters. It is a must read but be prepared for the different writing style. When you do finish it come back and share your thoughts and if you already finished it, please comment so we can talk about this overall great series.
Although I've not read it yet, I've heard people are put off by the writing and especially by the ending. I have to say, I'm not expecting much.
ReplyDeleteVery true, as I mentioned above I did not enjoy the writing style. I can understand why many fans will be put off by the ending. People become very invested in their characters.
