Gamer Corner: John Doe

Welcome to this week's installment of Gamer Corner, where Fangirl Review interviews a gamer and gets his thoughts on the gaming world and learning what he is enjoying at the moment.

Tell me a little bit about yourself? What rig do you currently game on? What kind of gamer do you classify yourself to be? ie. PC, Console, Tabletop, LARP as well as Hardcore, RPG, etc.

Think I might classify as nostalgic console gamer, PC is a tool which I use mainly for piracy, work, mail and porn. I got most consoles from NES famicom to Wii, but PS2 and XBOX mark a threshold I didn’t get beyond. I like all sort of games, but consider most Sport and Racing Simulations the least interesting. I really dig simply addictive concepts, as well as atmospheric RPGs or Adventures.

What is your first memory of gaming?

That’s probably some Tiger Electronic Handheld (would love to find that one somewhere in the attic.. I had a pretty sweet submarine shooter but I don’t recall the name) or Super Mario Bros on NES, I have fond memories forcing my Grandpa and Uncle to play with me – it was beyond their heads – but apparently I didn’t have a lot of friends back then :-).

What game are you currently playing? Do you enjoy that game, why? How’s the overall game play and graphics?
Currently I am playing Zelda – Ocarina of time on Gamecube, New Super Mario Bros. on Wii and Donkey Kong Returns on Wii. I enjoy all of those games a lot.  The overall game play and graphics are very appealing, since all of those three games can be considered as makeovers from classic originals, the developers did a good job there! The controls and gameplay of Wii Mario and Donkey Kong is very faithful, the use of Wii motion control is pleasantly limited, meaning you rarely have to shake the shit out of your nunchuk while playing!

Would you recommend it, why?

Yeah I would recommend all of those three games mentioned! Not only if you follow the retro hype, but if you consider yourself a gamer at all, there is no way around Zelda, Mario and to a lesser degree Donkey Kong. You need to finish at least on installment of any of those games, no matter which port, to be allowed in my book of videogamers!

Are there any games coming out that you are looking forward to?

I don’t know what games are coming out anymore. I am bitter about the whole current state of the industry, but just yesterday I read about a new entry in the Alien saga, Alien Isolation. Maybe that one will get my panties wet again!

If you could design your own game what would it be like?

It’s the same in all forms of art, any output that gives you the feeling “I’ve never experienced that before” is appreciated. But as you might noticed, I have a more conservative background to gaming and I would love to see a fresh contemporary approach to the genre of Point&Click Adventures!

Thoughts on this new generation of consoles – Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One?

I have only tried out the Wii U yet, but in a nutshell I guess the same could be said for all three consoles: nothing really new or exciting that justifies the price or the leap to another console. Only some minor graphic improvements compared to their predecessors (with the expception of Wii U maybe, but HD my ass)

What are your thoughts on the gaming industry?

It’s industry, always was, but the share of artistic curiosity and expression has lost most of it’s influence. Hardly anyone dares to risk anything, the primary goal is sell as much and as fast as you can.

But there is hope. With the democratization of the means of game development, a lot of people outside the industry got a chance to get their games and ideas out to a large audience.

10 years from now, where do you see the industry? Are you happy with that direction? If you had the power, what direction would you have the gaming industry go?

I think there is a fair chance that in 10 years, there will be only one hegemonical corporation housing all game developing companies that are left. Maybe there will be still names like Nintendo around but there output will be controlled and distributed through somebody else, maybe Google, maybe Amazon.

The consoles of the future will be mere firmware updates to your TV or Smartphone, physical storage mediums will be a thing of the past and you will control your game via smart contact lenses and brainwaves.

Please – Kill me!

Favorite Game (can include tabletop) of all time and why?

Tetris will forever be the perfect game, at least in my opinion. Perfection is best achieved through reduction of all that isn’t necessary. And when talking about perfection in videogames – Tetris does this best!

In these days of sensory overload, the modern zeitgeist (not only in gaming) depends on literally nuking your synapses to get any feedback at all. We are lazy fucks and don’t deserve any better!

Additional Thoughts and Comments?

As I said, we are a lazy, spoiled and bored generation. The Internet has turned out to be that vast and endless realm of nothingness. The absence of anything has created a diminishing interest in everything.

Thank you to the nameless person that provided this response. If you would like to be interviewed for Gamer Corner please feel free to contact me at fangirlcontact@gmail.com.
