We don’t need another Superman

This is going to be a different Fangirl Review article. This is an op-ed piece so buckle up and prepare yourself for the ride.

I have been with the CW since its switch over from the WB and I have enjoyed its various programming. Was I a heartbroken blerd when Clark never flew in Smallville; yes I was. I have now started to invest into the Arrowverse but only select shows and the crossovers.

I was excited when I learned of the show Black Lightning. Finally, a superhero show in the CW that is filled with people that look like me! The soundtrack alone was simply amazing and perfectly timed with the episode’s content.

It annoyed me to no end that this show was cancelled. I am sure they can justify it based on budgeting and viewership. But let’s be honest, the show did not receive the support it should have and was constantly kept separate from the other shows. Maybe if they did a better job at actually having the viewers of the other shows invest in Black Lightning it would have performed better. We were introduced to new super heroes of the Arrowverse by having the individuals appear in an already established show. We did not receive that with Black Lightning, frankly it felt like the show was purposely being segregated (yes, I use this term, deal with it) from the rest of Arrowverse.

I apologize for my previous paragraphs, I am going to get to my point now. I watch the CW shows every week and I have seen many advertisements on the new Superman show. I did not think anything of it until I actually clicked on Black Lightning in the CW app and that is when I realized that I have missed three episodes of this show. I was simply flabbergasted. I had to ask myself the question why have I not seen any advertisements especially since in the last few weeks I have watched at least two other CW shows. I have sat through advertisements about yet another Caucasian male superhero but I did not see one single advertisement for Black Lightning.

This is the show’s final season and I am beyond disappointed in the CW. Either promote all your shows equally or do not promote them at all. This show is too powerful to be pushed aside and forgotten. It depicts an educated Black family that is passionate and determined to love each other and save each other. It goes against so many stereotypes and it’s a beautiful representation. I had to write this article to tell the CW that they have to do better. To tell Hollywood as a whole that Black viewers want to see more of these types of shows. I am tired of the reality shows and the drug kingpin shows. There is so much more depth to Black and Brown viewers. There are more independent production companies coming about and bringing alternatives (KevOnStage Studios is out here doing amazing things) for viewers that it is time that Hollywood wake-up and realize that we do not need another Superman, we need representation if you want to keep us.

Comment below your thoughts.

Why Black Panther & Luke Cage are Important to the Super Hero Genre

With calls for diversity becoming more and more prevalent throughout all forms of media, I thought now would be a good time to give my thoughts on this topic as it pertains to the super hero genre. Comics have always been an escape of sorts for me. Growing up, I was/still am a nerd/geek and fantasy stories are my favorite type of storytelling. Also growing up (and this pertains mostly to comics) they weren’t that many heroes that looked like me or that I felt I could relate to in any shape or form. As a matter of fact this is probably one of the main reasons that the X-Men comics resonated with me so much at that time. The characters were different and diverse (so to speak), also they were pretty much hated just for walking the earth and breathing air. If you read comics you know that crossovers and events happen from time to time and these type stories can be good or bad depending on who the author is and how the story plays out. This was how I was initially introduced to the characters of Luke Cage and Black Panther.

Fast forward a few years and Marvel Studios have made a “connected” super hero universe, the new hotness as it were. Not to mention that their NetFlix shows so far have been nothing short of outstanding. With that being said, at least on the movie side of things, there hasn’t been much change on the diversity front. I know that there are black actors in these movies, however, when I look closely it just seems like they are the token sidekick that just so happens to be black. I am also fully aware that is how it is in a majority of comics but at the very least now it is being addressed. This summer’s Captain America Civil War had two standout performances, one of them being the Black Panther, T’Challa crown prince of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Chadwick Boseman did an excellent job in the role so much so that people wanted to see the Panther movie ASAP! This is an awesome thing that the character was well received because it opens the doors for many other characters. Hollywood is a very interesting animal in that they go where the money can be made. It’s widely known that the Black Panther movie will have a majority black cast. Which is completely understandable as the comic is about the king of an African nation. It is also being directed by Ryan Coogler who is also helping to write the film. If this movie does well then this can very well be what opens the door for heroes of other ethnicities as well.

On the NetFlix side of things Marvel has been doing an awesome job. The two seasons of DareDevil and one season of Jessica Jones made it seem like they pulled a lot of their actors from The Wire. I must admit that I always thought that Cage would get his own movie or at the very least a Heroes for Hire movie would be made. However, after thinking about it, NetFlix is probably the best way to go with his character. This show, like the comic will be based in Harlem, New York. Like Panther, this show will have a largely black cast which is more than likely due to where it takes place. Once again, if this show is well received then doors should be wide open for other more obscure and riskier characters to get there moment in the spotlight. Characters like Static Shock, John Stewart (the Green Lantern not the former Daily Show Host), Hardware, Icon, Rocket, Blue Beetle, and many others. There is one catch though and that is there must be support. Showing support is the best way to get studios to have more faith in those riskier projects. It will also lend itself to more ethnically diverse filmmakers getting a chance to show their talent behind the camera. Showing support will hopefully open the eyes of the studios and writers of these projects to realize we are more than just mystical magical Negroes, sassy jive talking friends, token sidekicks, thugs with a heart of gold, drug pushers, pimps, athletes, or gangsters. That we can be seen as warriors, kings, queens, heroes, nerds, geeks, doctors, lawyers, artists, or just plain normal people.

Throwback Thursday: Penguin Land

Hello Everyone,

Throwback Thursday Video games is back!

This week I am highlighting a favorite of my youth, Penguin Land. I am not sure how many people actually played this game but I very much enjoyed this.

History: Penguin Land is a Sega Master System game and the second game in the Doki Doki Penguin Land series from August 18, 1987. In this game you play as a penguin going through a puzzle platformer stage and try to guide your egg around the polar bears, rocks, and other hazards to the end of the stage. The game has a total of 50 stages and a level editor which can save up to 15 additional levels. The level editor data is stored on the game's battery back-up RAM. The game begins where three penguin eggs are lost on a distant planet. The player controls the Penguin Mission Commander Overbite, who must guide these eggs down to the bottom of a frigid cavern filled with traps, enemies, and secret passages. The Spaceship Crew eagerly awaits at the bottom of this cavern to welcome the hero Overbite and carry the eggs to safety.

The object of the game is to successfully push and drop an egg down to the bottom of a vertically scrolling cavern of ice. The player is able to push the egg left and right, push it off cliffs onto lower platforms, and melt ice blocks to create a passage for the egg. If the egg falls more than 3 blocks downward, it will break. Also, if Overbite lands on the egg, but the egg cannot be rolled left or right, the egg will break. The round is completed when the egg is successfully delivered to the bottom of the level.

Fangirl Thoughts: This game was so much fun and heartbreaking at the same time. I really thought of this as my console Lemmings game. It was a great puzzler that would you leave you stomped and made when your egg is broken. I enjoyed sitting for hours trying to figure out how to get that stupid egg from the top of the screen to the very bottom.

I like building my own levels. I would make them impossible to super easy. I enjoyed stumping my brothers and beating the clock on a hard level.

Who remembers this game?

ALMOST HUMAN ( Gone Too Soon Series)

(November 17, 2013 (2013-11-17) – March 3, 2014)

Wikipedia

In 2048, the uncontrollable evolution of science and technology has caused crime rates to rise an astounding 400%. To combat this, the overwhelmed police force has implemented a new policy: every human police officer is paired with a lifelike combat-model android.
John Kennex (Karl Urban), a troubled detective, has a reason to hate these new robot partners. Almost two years previously, Kennex and his squad were raiding the hideout of a violent gang known as The Syndicate, but ended up being ambushed and outgunned. Kennex tried to save his badly injured partner, but the accompanying logic-based android officer abandoned them both because the wounded man's chances of survival were low and it wouldn't have been "logical" to save him. An explosion then took off Kennex's leg and killed his partner.
After waking up from a 17-month coma, Kennex has to deal with a cybernetic prosthetic leg and huge gaps in his memory, which he tries to recover through visits to a black market memory-recovery doctor called a Recollectionist, in the city slums. Besides trying to remember as much as he can about the raid and The Syndicate, he is also coming to terms with being abandoned by his girlfriend Anna.
Kennex is then recalled to the force by Captain Sandra Maldonado (Lili Taylor), and partnered with a standard-issue MX-43 android, which he soon throws from a moving vehicle, when it threatens to report his unusual behavior. He is assigned a replacement android, an older DRN model originally decommissioned for police work and about to be transferred to the Space Station.[2] Created to be as close to human as possible, the DRN androids have trouble dealing with some of their own emotional responses, which was the reason they were replaced by the logic-based MX units.[3] Kennex's unit, known as Dorian (Michael Ealy), immediately proves himself unique, with a clear dislike of being referred to as a "synthetic", and a dry, friendly, sarcasm-oriented wit. Key to the story arc is the growth and development of Kennex and Dorian's relationship.

Characters

  • Karl Urban as Detective John Kennex, a detective who lost a leg after a Synthetic left him behind because he and his partner had a low chance of survival. He awakes from a coma 17 months later, to find his leg has been replaced with a synthetic prosthetic, and returns to duty.
  • Michael Ealy as DRN-0167,[4] called "Dorian", a retired DRN model Police Synthetic. Dorian shows himself to be unique and resents the term "Synthetic."
  • Minka Kelly as Detective Valerie Stahl, another Detective serving under Captain Maldonado, and a love interest for Kennex. She is a Chrome,[5] a human genetically engineered for excellence and success. Other Chromes consider her choice of profession to be a waste of potential.
  • Mackenzie Crook as Technician Rudy Lom.
  • Michael Irby as Detective Richard Paul.
  • Lili Taylor as Captain Sandra Maldonado.

Mack’s Thoughts

In a not-so-distant future, human cops and androids partner up to protect and serve. This show was awesomeeeeeee.  Futuristic and Fantastic.  The cast had great chemistry and as always I became emotionally attached to the characters and craved a season 2 or at least closure on the overall plot.  This show had great potential and was on its way to finding its niche. Why order shows and then throw them around without support and backing. This show would have did great on SyFy or Netflix.  Another show gone to soon. Yet more money went into a third season of the following which was subsequently cancelled and should have been after season 2. Gotham continues to lives on which in my opinion is a horrible show but I digress, please feel free to leave your comments below.

The Flash Season 1 Finale

SPOILER ALERT SPOLER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
Season 1 has come to an end but do not fret FLANS not only did we get easter eggs but we also got renewed for a highly anticipated Season 2; hence the cliff hanger or should I say sky danger. The episode before the finale saw our Scarlet Speedster at Ferris airfield base, shut down after a pilot mysteriously disappeared which has to be a Hal Jordan/Green Lantern reference. That episode also saw the Flash receiving aide from Green Arrow and Firestorm. (who are  real life cousins) Flash forward to the finale and Dr. Wells/ Eobard Thawne /Reverse Flash mentioned that Cisco was affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion which is responsible for activating the metahuman gene in heroes and villains alike. Was this an early confirmation that Cisco will become the superhero VIBE like his comic book counterpart with sonic powers that enable him to create shocks waves strong enough to disrupt the speedforce and shatter concrete and steel (Watch out Skye/Daisy/Earthquake from Marvel Agents of Shield)? Only time will tell which did tell us and showed us a glimpse of Killer Frost; the ice generating villain/ heat vampire that only someone like Firestorm can satisfy. Subsequently, the two got married in the finale. Hmmm maybe thier offspring will be called ICYHOT…. who knows we can only wait and see. So a helmet shot out of the warmhole which looks seemingly like helmet of the speedster Jay Garrick or possibly the original speedster Hermes of Mount Olmypus.

So after the butt kicking in the last episode by The Flash, Arrow & Firestorm, Dr. Wells was locked up by the Scooby Gang in their metahuman prison. Who was able to broker a deal in which Barry would travel back in time to save his mother and wells would get to travel back to the future. Fortunately or Unfortunately Future Barry convinced Present Barry in the past (Brain Freeze) to not alter the time stream so Barry instead took the opportunity to say goodbye to his mom before her untimely demise. Heartbroken Barry (Still present Barry…. KEEP UP) decided to stop Dr.Wells from traveling BACK TO THE FUTURE. Outraged, Dr. Wells goes Reverse Flash and is out for blood threatening to murder the entire Scooby Gang. Eddie Thawne, the great-great-grandfather of the Reverse Flash defeats him by killing himself so the Reverse Flash could never be born much to the heartbroken surprise of Iris, Joe, the FLANS and this writer. Due to instability, the worm hole becomes a black hole in which the gang including Iris have to vacate the area leaving Eddie’s lifeless body to be sucked into the unknown. The episode ends with Barry running around in circles (as usual) trying to use his manipulation of the speedforce to close the black hole before all is lost leaving FLANS on the edge of their seats as we must wait for Season 2 to learn the fate of the Scooby Gang and Central City.  It was bittersweet to see Dr.Wells cease to exist because even though Dr.Wells despised the Future Flash; he conflicting loved the Present Flash and the Scooby Gang. He viewed Cisco as a surrogate son. A 2hour series finale would have been better.Overall this series has been a FLAN favorite and a runaway hit for geeks worldwide. I look forward to Season 2 but Season 1 can be caught up on via binge watching on popular streaming sights.

Wikipedia
After witnessing his mother's supernatural murder and his father's wrongful conviction for the crime, Barry Allen is taken in by Detective Joe West and his family. Allen becomes a brilliant but socially awkward crime scene investigator for the Central City Police Department. His obsession with his tragic past causes him to become an outcast among his peers; he investigates cold cases, paranormal occurrences, and cutting-edge scientific advancements that may shed light on his mother's murder. No one believes his description of the crime—that a ball of lightning with the face of a man invaded their home that night—and Allen is fiercely driven to vindicate himself and to clear his father's name. Fourteen years after his mother's death, an advanced particle accelerator malfunctions during its public unveiling, bathing the city center with a previously unknown form of radiation and creating a severe thunderstorm. Allen is struck by lightning from the storm and doused with chemicals in his lab. Awakening after a nine-month coma, he discovers he has the ability to move at superhuman speeds. Dr. Harrison Wells, the disgraced designer of the failed particle accelerator, describes Barry's special nature as "metahuman"; Allen soon discovers that he is not the only one who was changed by the radiation. Allen vows to use his gifts to protect Central City from the escalating violence of metahuman criminals. He is aided by a few close friends and associates who guard his secrets.

Constantine (Gone too Soon Series)

Another Goon Too Soon Series

The series aired from October 24, 2014 to February 13, 2015, over 13 episodes. On May 8, 2015, NBC decided not to renew the series for a second season.

With a heavy heart and utter disappointment with NBC, that I announce the cancellation of Constantine. This show had potential to strike gold but under NBC it ever did. This show is definitely a runner up for a Netflix vehicle show after the success of adult theme rated mature Dare Devil but that’s a far stretch and possibly the only spell that Constantine doesn’t know when reviving the dead.  I enjoyed this show I mean let face it I’m a geek and I would have liked to have seen more seasons and some main street supporting cast from the successful comic book.

According to Wikipedia, John Constantine, a demon hunter and dabbling master of the occult, must struggle with his past sins while protecting the innocent from the converging supernatural threats that constantly break through to our world due to the "Rising Darkness". Balancing his actions upon the line of good and evil, Constantine uses his skills and a supernatural scry map to journey across the nation to send these terrors back to their own world, all for the hope of redeeming his soul from eternal torment

Constantine (TV Series) Cast and characters

Main

Recurring and guest

.
You can still catch Constantine in the comics... He was a main character in Gods of Injustice Year 3  comic series based on the video game. Its a must see with a great price. The digital downloads are 0.99 weekly.

The Messengers (CW) Series Premiere

Series Premiere
Satan is cast out of Heaven in what is seemingly a meter to earth. The impact and force of his landing emits divine power that kills a group of human beings who are reborn as angels or messengers armed with powers to fight in the coming Apocalypse against the four horseman. One messenger was on earth for seven years, while 5 others were chosen at the arrival of Satan with another messenger yet to be determined. So far the 6 messengers have the power of future visions, understanding in any language, telepathy, healing, and strength with some powers still remaining to be seen. Each messengers has dramatic struggles present in their personal life in addition to coming to terms with their new found power.

Wikipedia
A mysterious object plummets to Earth, sending out a shock wave that causes five strangers to die, only to miraculously come back to life moments later. The members of the group are Vera (Shantel VanSanten), a struggling radio-astronomer living in New Mexico who is searching for her missing son; Erin (Sofia Black-D'Elia), a young mother in Tucson, Arizona who is desperate to protect her seven-year-old daughter Amy from her abusive policeman ex-husband; Peter (Joel Courtney), a troubled high school student and orphan in Little Rock, Arkansas; Raul (J.D. Pardo), a federal agent in Mexico who is looking to escape his dangerous and violent undercover assignment; and Joshua (Jon Fletcher), a charismatic second-generation televangelist in Houston, Texas. Most mysterious of all is the figure known only as The Man (Diogo Morgado), who offers Vera the location of her abducted son if she will help him with one morally complicated task which puts her on a collision course with Rose (Anna Diop), a nurse in Houston who has been in a coma for seven years after being shot by an unknown hitman. Drawn together by fate and biblical prophecy, the "Messengers" soon learn they now have supernatural gifts that might be the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture.

IMBD

A mysterious object crashes on earth and a group of unconnected strangers die from an energy pulse it emits, but then re-awaken to find out that they have been deemed responsible for preventing the impending Apocalypse

Mack’s Thoughts
The CW has another show with caters to super natural appetites but the Friday night time slot is often a series killer. I thoroughly enjoy this show and the cast of characters, which means it will probably be cancelled. The CW loves starting a story and then ending in once fans become involved but fails to produce big numbers. This show has a lot of potential but it requires a strong viewership to survive. Oh how I loved The Tomorrow People and The Secret Circle, Star Crossed and The Birds of Prey but The CW often produces great shows that they fail to let flourish. No disrespect to Super Natural or Vampire Diaries fans but if you are going to keep producing season after season of the same shows then why waste time producing new ones and then cancelling them. Why just maintain the entire prime time line up with the same type of show to appease viewership and ratings. In any event, this show might fair greater with another vehicle like Netflix especially with the success of Dare Devil. I love a good live action superheroes/comic series but I think there is also room for original shows with heroic content.

Marvel’s Daredevil (Netflix) Season 1 Review.

Marvel’s Daredevil (Netflix) Season 1 Review.

IMBD
A blind lawyer with his other senses superhumanly enhanced fights crime as a costumed superhero.

Wikipedia
Lawyer-by-day Matt Murdock uses his heightened senses from being blinded as a young boy to fight crime at night on the streets of New York City's Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood as Daredevil.

Mack Thoughts

This just in….The man without fear is back and he continues to prove that sight is not a prerequisite for kicking a** and taking names. This web series provided R rated content that daredevils and marvel fans deserve. I don’t think I able to count on one hand how many times the “ sugar honey ice tea” word was used but it was refreshing that Marvel left its Disney audience at home and catered to superheroe fans and geeks alike. It was like watching an R rated version of Kick A** during the fight scenes. Although Daredevil has “abilities” he still reminds me of the caped crusader but without the vast fortune to accommodate a headquarters and cool equipment. Nope just an old fashioned butt whopping by a blind man without fear and heightened senses. Daredevil is definitely connected to MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) as they makes references to the “incident” instead of fully discussing or addressing the events that transpired in The Avengers when the aliens invaded. Don’t get your hopes up just yet Dare Devil and The Avengers will not be providing support to each other anytime soon. As the Creators stated while they both may exist in the same universe; Dare Devil is in the dark corner of that Universe. Translation Dare Devil is fighting for 1. Hell’s Kitchen and for 2. the impoverished “little guy” that the law fails to protect against criminals that are not important enough for tech geniuses, thunder gods and super spies. Daredevil is fighting against pedophiles, rapist, drug dealers, thugs, criminal organizations such as the Russians, Triads & Yakooza and The King Pin.

We get to learn about what events allowed Matt Murdock to become DareDevil like that accident that claimed his sight, the relationship with his dad, lack of his mother, the conflict with his behavior and his faith and being trained by his mentor; Stick.

We learned just as much about the Wilson Fisk. His equally impoverished and violent upbringing. His conflict with duplicitous nature and his early beginnings running a crime syndicate and meeting the woman behind the criminal mastermind.

Overall this series is awesome. Marvel and Netflix got it right from the origin stories, to the action packed fight scenes with bloody violence, sick graphics and the plot with engagingly realistic storylines. (Ben Affleck better not flub the Batman/Supermn Dawn of Justice Movie as he did the DareDevil movie in2003 or it may too need to be aired out and redone by Netflix) Netflix has just created a new niche for fans and providing all 13 episodes at once for binge watching….

BRAVO NETFLIX BRAVO

Let’s first learn about the faction for Good in the series.
*DareDevil aka Matt Murdock, The Lawyer by day and Bad A** Can of Whoop A** supplier by night with the constant need to repent as he is catholic.

*Claire Temple is a nurse who gets more than she bargains for when she aids Daredevil with his many bloody injuries

The faction for Bad in the series
