Fate: The Winx Saga Review

IMDB Synopsis: A live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's Winx Club (2004). It follows Bloom as she adjusts to life in the Otherworld, where she must learn to control her dangerous magical powers.

Fangirl Thoughts:  I was introduced to this show by two different people and I figured I would sit down and watch it. When I first heard about it, I wondered if it had any connection to the Nickelodeon cartoon and I was surprised that I was correct.

The show is a darker, edgier version of the cartoon and it immediately sucked me in. Sadly the main character Bloom follows the old trope of the choosen one that makes ridiculous selfish mistakes but continues to land on her feet. Why can't we have a character that is strong and makes good decisions? I do not think that is too hard of a concept.

The graphics do not look like they were high budget but I can understand that as it was only green lit for six episodes to see if they would be fans for the show. Let me tell you! This show sucks you in quick and I highly recommend it. I enjoyed the relationships between the characters as well as the different types of magic used in the show.

There are whispers of the show getting a second season but nothing has been officially announced by Netflix so I guess we just have to wait and see.

Until next time,

The Wilds Review

IMDB Summary: A group of teens must survive after a crash leaves them stranded. There's just one twist to this thrilling drama - these girls did not end up on this island by accident.

Spoiler Alert - My Thoughts: Okay so think Castaway meets The Maze Runner. This is basically a psychological experiment being run on a group of girls and we see the foolishness that happens. Like in Maze Runner there is an undercover agent and within this group there are actually two.

The girls bond through various trials and we get to actually watch the puppet masters attempt to control everything. Obviously to make the show interesting, the puppet masters fail spectacularly throughout which is fun to watch.

I started watching the show because I saw a friend post that the show was great and that there was a big twist. I sat and watched the show and to me there were no surprises or twists but it was an enjoyable show. When we see the girls after being rescued from the island, I immediately thought of the underground tunnels of Ancora Psychiatric Hospital. It was obvious to me that the girls were not actually rescued at this point and were still being experimented on so it came as no surprise to me as it was revealed.

Another twist was the reveal of the second agent as the first was outted immediately. I picked that one out pretty easily. It is like when you read any mystery novel, any person that they point a finger at you must immediately rule out. The pulled a Usual Suspects moment and choose the person that appeared the weakest but in reality was watching and taking notes. I picked Nora as the other agent because one I was rooting for her just because she was Black and two because she made the most sense out of the ones left.

The last big twist I believe is at the end when it is revealed that there is another island filled with just boys. I think this is no surprise because c'mon if you have any scientific background you know that you cannot just run one experiment with only 9 girls that is just a case study and cannot be extrapolated to the population. The goal of this study is to make a change and in order to make sure your data is not being influenced by unknown variables you have to run multiples just like in The Maze Runner.

The show was overall fun and I look forward to seeing how it all plays out as the girls are aware that they are an experiment and to to see the aftermath of the shark attack.

What did you think of the show?

Decoding the Defenders: Netflix Unveils the Gateway Shows That Lead to a Heroic Binge

Netflix superpower? Knowing what viewers should watch next, especially if it’s something they’d never expect. Case in point, one in eight Marvel Television viewers were new to comic book based content before discovering their first heroic binge on Netflix.

Viewers are finding their way to the adventures of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist through shows as diverse as the Defenders crew. And it’s not by chance, it’s by design - more than 80% of all shows are discovered through Netflix recommendations.

“At Netflix we know genres are just wrappers, which is why we work hard to create algorithms that help members break these pre-conceived notions and make it easier for them to find stories they’ll love, even in seemingly unlikely places,” said Todd Yellin, Vice President of Product.

Getting over a genre bias isn’t limited to the Marvel Universe. One in five Stranger Things fans were new to horror before entering the Upside Down2. Similarly, one in seven Black Mirror watchers were new to science fiction before exploring the dark side of technology3.

Looking into the shows those new to the genre watched most before its four Marvel series, Netflix uncovered interesting patterns that act as a bingeing gateway to the Marvel Universe .

Anti-heroes and moral ambiguity lead viewers to Marvel’s Daredevil.

Stories that dabble in life’s grey area heighten viewers’ senses for Daredevil, like the political turmoil of House of Cards and the thin lines of family loyalty in Bloodline. As do characters who blur the lines between vigilante and villain, like Walter White’s entrepreneurial antics in Breaking Bad and Dexter Morgan’s homicidal heroics in Dexter.

Sharp humor, strong females and dark crime draw watchers to Marvel’s Jessica Jones.

It’s Jessica Jones' sharp wit that makes her binge worthy. Series with smart humor, like Master of None, Friends and John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid, draw viewers to Jones as do stories with strong female leads, like Orange is the New Black. A nod to her detective roots, series immersed in dark criminal worlds also do the trick, like the psychological thrill of Making A Murderer.

Dangerous worlds and complex consequences direct viewers to Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Shows that expose the dark side of society draw viewers to Luke Cage, like the question of guilt in Amanda Knox and the examination of technology in Black Mirror. Similarly, series immersed in dangerous realms, like a cartel-ridden Medellin in Narcos and a zombie-filled Atlanta in The Walking Dead, lead watchers to Cage’s world.

Edgy coming-of-age tales steer watchers to Marvel’s Iron Fist.

Grit isn’t the only path to a comic binge. Edgy coming-of-age series, like Love, Shameless and 13 Reasons Why, bring viewers to Danny Rand and his transitional tale from orphan to crime fighter. The passage from warrior to winner also struck a chord with viewers courtesy of Ultimate Beastmaster.

Methodology

1 Members who had never watched content tagged “superhero” on Netflix prior to watching one of the Marvel series.
2 Members who had never watched content tagged “horror” on Netflix prior to watching Stranger Things.
3 Members who had never watched content tagged “science fiction” on Netflix prior to watching Black Mirror.
4 Netflix analyzed viewing of members who had never watched content tagged “superhero” prior to watching one of its Marvel series to identify the top ten most watched global titles prior to each series for those new to the genre. The analysis was conducted across 40+ countries between 2015 and 2017.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY GRAPHIC NOVELS COME TO NETFLIX

GERARD WAY AND GABRIEL BÁ’S THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY GRAPHIC NOVELS COME TO NETFLIX IN NEW LIVE ACTION SERIES

New 10-episodes series from Universal Cable Productions and Dark Horse Entertainment

Netflix, the world’s leading internet TV network, will bring the ten-episode series The Umbrella Academy to members worldwide in 2018.

Based on the popular, Eisner award-winning comics and graphic novels created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy is a live action series that follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) -- The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror, and The White Violin -- as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the comic series garnered much praise from fans and critics alike for its alternate and twisted take on the superhero genre.

“I am thrilled that The Umbrella Academy has found a home at Netflix. I couldn’t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel Bá and myself had when creating the comic, and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show,” said Gerard Way.

“What drew us to The Umbrella Academy is that it’s wholly unique, visual and stylized,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “These aren’t the usual superheroes, and this series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels -- dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality. We’re excited to see this world and introduce these unforgettable heroes to Netflix members around the globe.”

“It’s a thrill to be producing this wonderful show for Netflix,” said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, and President, Universal Cable Productions. “It’s been a passion project for the UCP development crew and we can’t wait to bring it to life.”

The Umbrella Academy will be produced by Universal Cable Productions. Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) will serve as executive producer and showrunner, with additional executive producers Bluegrass Television and Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment. Gerard Way will serve as co-executive producer. The pilot script was adapted from the comic book series by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist).

Sixteen-year-old David (pronounced "Dah-veed") Mazouz stars on FOX TV's Gotham as a young Bruce Wayne, the orphaned son of Martha and Thomas Wayne as he follows the path to ultimately becoming Batman. Under the care of his butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee), Mazouz's character interacts with other members of the Batman Universe, including Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) while attempting to solve the murder of his parents. Mazouz began his acting career in commercials. At eight years old, he landed his first film, Coming and Going, directed by Edoardo Ponti. Shortly thereafter, he was cast in the cable movie Amish Grace. He then landed a role in the FOX drama Touch, starring opposite Kiefer Sutherland.

On film, Mazouz most recently completed The Darkness, playing the haunting child of Radha Mitchell and Kevin Bacon, and Incarnate starring Aaron Eckart as an exorcist wrestling with a child possessed by a demon. Other films include the horror thriller Sanitarium, alongside Malcolm McDowell, Lou Diamond Phillips, Lacey Chabert, Chris Mulkey, and Robert Englund. Other television roles include a kid in detention in Mike and Molly, James Spader's son in The Office, a troubled youth in Private Practice, a dying boy in Criminal Minds, an orphan in Drop Dead Diva, and a guest star in Major Crimes.

Mazouz was born in Los Angeles, where he lives with his parents and older sister.

Sean Pertwee consistently captivates audiences with his compelling performances in a variety of roles that span film, television, and stage. Pertwee can be seen on Fox's hit television series Gotham, which will begin its fourth season this September 2017 during the week preceding the Baltimore Comic-Con. On the show, Pertwee plays Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's unflappable butler. The show follows the story behind Commissioner James Gordon's rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman's arrival.

Pertwee began his film career in Stephen Frears' Joe Orton biopic Prick Up Your Ears opposite Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina. From there, he went on to appear in Paul Anderson's Shopping opposite Jude Law. He followed those roles with a number of enthralling performances in Paul W.S. Anderson's Event Horizon opposite Laurence Fishburne; Soldier, opposite Kurt Russell and directed again by Paul W.S. Anderson; Love, Honour and Obey opposite Jude Law and Jonny Lee Miller; Kurt Wimmer's Equalibrium opposite Christian Bale and Sean Bean; and the lead role of Sgt. Harry G. Wells in Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers. Other notable film credits include Deadly Voyage, Wild Bill, Doomsday, Blue Juice where he appeared alongside Catherine Zeta Jones and Ewan McGregor, The 51st State with Samuel L Jackson and Robert Carlyle, and in Declan Lowey's Alan Partridge opposite Steve Coogan.

On the small screen, Pertwee played the iconic role of Detective Lestrade in the CBS show Elementary opposite Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes. After touring for three years, Pertwee continued his classical training by playing Julius Caesar for the BBC and Macbeth for Michael Bogdanov's production for C4 films.

Pertwee currently splits his time between London and New York City, where Gotham films.

"These two are such a great actors and have such a rapport on the screen," said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "David's evolution on Gotham from young orphan to teenage detective has been fascinating to observe, and I can't wait to see what he'll do with the character of Bruce Wayne next season. And Sean's well-dressed and manicured tough-guy father figure is such a fun mix of conflicting roles, which he performs wonderfully. I'm personally thrilled to have them both as a guests of the show, as I'm sure our fans will be."

Marvel's The Defenders Review

IMDB storyline: "Marvel's The Defenders" follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal - to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

Fangirl Thoughts: They brought the team together! Marvel has been working so well on Netflix. They had a set plan and I must admit it was a fantastic plan. Fans were able to get familiar with Daredevil (we are going to just forget that pesky movie), Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist first before bringing them together. Now we have the Defenders which brings all those characters together.

It was an easy show to binge watch. It was a bit slow and annoying in the beginning but I understand that they needed to set everyone up and show their investment in defeating The Hand. Yes, The Hand (silly name). I like that once they were introduced the show really started moving and I became really invested. Jessica's sarcasm was welcome and it balanced out the annoying aspect of Iron Fist.

Best Moment: The best moment in the show is when Luke Cage pointed out Iron Fist's white privilege. I must admit I am getting tired of the storyline of the rich guy that loses his parents and seeks revenge and ignores the wants and needs of others around him until his revenge is satisfied. Cage pointing out how Iron Fist does not use all that he has to do more and being only invested in himself finally makes the man look at himself. Though as I was watching the show and they figured out the Hand needed Iron Fist, I said well then remove him from the playing field so they can't get him. When the bumbling team finally decided to do just that Iron Fist was a spoiled brat about it and they had to fight him. How stupid can this man be. I must admit that I did not watch his show as I had no investment in his story and after watching the Defenders I am still not interested. I just wanted to take a sponge and scrub off that silly tattoo, I don't care of it's significance.

So wait in order for the Hand to live so long they would use the stem cells of old creatures? Right? It was just stem-cells that they were basically bathing in.

I look forward to seeing that Marvel has up their sleeve next. What did you think of the show?

S/N: Sigourney Weaver is such a badass chick!

Review: 13 Reasons Why

IMDB Storyline: Thirteen Reasons Why, based on the best-selling books by Jay Asher, follows teenager Clay Jensen 9Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers a group of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), his classmate and crush who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah unfolds an emotional audio diary, detailing the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Through Hannah and Clay’s dual narratives, Thirteen Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect viewers.

Fangirl Thoughts: This is a must watch Netflix series. This show will make you question all the crap you did in high school. The viciousness of teenagers is well known but to have it displayed so thoroughly was interesting to see. As a viewer you cannot help but to think back on if you were bullied, the bully, the outsider, etc. We all played our roles in high school and as an adult to watch this show you look back and recognize exactly what role you might have played.

As you watch the show you cannot help but to scream at Clay to hurry up and play all the tapes so you can hear his and hear how it all ended. I enjoyed listening to Hannah explain her feelings and it was a shame to see a light like her just destroyed from people being selfish and careless.

There were so many questions left unanswered and while I will understand if they end it there, I want to know what happens to all the characters.

Binge worthy score - 9.8 out of 10. This show will have you thinking about it for quite some time after.

What did you think?

Netflix Cheating is on the Rise Globally and Shows No Signs of Stopping

New data reveals 46% of streaming couples around the world are watching ahead of their partners and most only plan to cheat more.

No relationship is safe. According to a new study* released by Netflix, nearly half (46%) of streaming couples around the world have “cheated” on their significant other, but it’s not what you think.

Defined as watching a TV show ahead of your significant other, Netflix cheating was first uncovered in a study in the U.S. in 2013. Four years later, cheating has increased three times[1] and has become a common behavior around the world. This behavior only continues to grow with 60% of consumers saying they’d cheat more if they knew they’d get away with it. And once you cheat, you can’t stop: 81% of cheaters are repeat offenders and 44% have cheated 3+ times.

In a binge-watching world where it’s easy to say ‘just one more,’ Netflix cheating has quickly become the new normal...

WHERE IS CHEATING HAPPENING? (EVERYWHERE)
Cheating happens all over the world….though it varies a bit by country. The most cheaters are in Brazil and Mexico where 57%-58% of streaming couples have cheated, respectively. The most loyal viewers are in Netherlands (73% have not cheated), Germany (65%) and Poland (60%).

WHAT SHOWS ARE WE CHEATING ON? (ALL OF THEM)
While no show is off limits, top cheating temptations are The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, American Horror Story, House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Narcos, and Stranger Things.

WHY DO WE CHEAT? (WE JUST CAN’T HELP IT)
Most don’t plan to cheat...it just happens: 80% of cheating is unplanned. The trigger for the growing trend in cheating? Two-thirds (66%) of cheaters said that “the shows are just so good we can’t stop bingeing.”

HOW DO WE CHEAT? (ANY WAY WE CAN)
Sleep with one eye open: 25% of cheating happens when one partner falls asleep. But whether this is even cheating is hotly debated. Half say “sleep cheating” doesn’t count (53%), but the morality of “sleep cheating” varies across the globe. Chileans think it’s no big deal, Japan sees it as unforgivable. Many are still cheating in secret: 45% never admit to their indiscretions.

IS CHEATING SO BAD? (DEPENDS WHERE YOU LIVE)
If you stray, don’t beat yourself up about it. Cheating has become more socially acceptable, with 46% saying it’s “not bad at all.” Unless of course you live in Hong Kong, where 40% think watching ahead of your partner is worse than having an actual affair.

IS MY PARTNER A CHEATER? (SPOILER ALERT: MOST LIKELY)
Cheating comes in many forms. Netflix has created a series of assets to help explain the phenomenon. Cheating Profiles highlight the most common types of offenders lurking in households around the world. This infographic illustrates cheating motivations and behaviors, and reaction GIFs help couples work through their indiscretions so they can protect their relationship...or keep on cheating.

Methodology
*The survey was conducted by SurveyMonkey from December 20-31, 2016 and based on 30,267 responses. The sample was balanced by age and gender and representative of an adult online population who watch TV shows via streaming services as a couple in The United States, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, India, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, UAE, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Poland, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, and Denmark.

Daredevil rules the USA according to Netflix

If you’re hunkering down in your blanket fort and waiting out another storm, chances are you’ve got the best kind of company: Netflix. According to Fortune, more than half of Americans currently use the streaming service for access to both movies and TV episodes. In recent years, those subscribers have increasingly flocked to Netflix originals, series developed and produced exclusively for streaming. Although Netflix doesn’t publish its ratings, this must have been a successful gamble since the provider announced it would make an astounding 50 percent of its content original in the next few years. If that means more Stranger Things, we can probably all agree the future is going to be weird and wonderful.

Which binge-worthy series was most likely to be streaming in neighborhoods near you? Inquiring minds wanted to know. Okay, it was us—the team at CableTV who wanted to know. And while there was lots of buzz about some of the newer Netflix originals, you’ll be surprised to find some familiar titles dominating the map all across the United States.

The big winner? Marvel rules the Universe, inspiring blind devotion in fourteen states with Daredevil and strong-arming seven more into watching Jessica Jones. A few other Netflix originals like Bloodline and Orange is the New Black were regional favorites, but they didn’t come close to touching Marvel’s superhero streaming status. Each state’s favorite show was identified by compiling a list of all the original Netflix content, and then analyzing state data from Google Trends in 2016. For the purposes of this map, we excluded movies, children’s shows, continuations (series aired previously on another network), and limited, one-time specials so we could isolate popular original content in each state. For instance, shows like Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life made our list because Netflix is rebooting the series and creating original content from what was previously a discontinued network program.

While there were some correlations with favoring shows with local settings, we found less evidence of those types of parallels in this map compared to others we’ve produced. This could be in part because the demographics of streamers tend to skew towards younger, more tech-savvy folks who need less comfort in their entertainment choices. What were the trends we discovered in tracking Netflix original content from sea to shining sea? Snuggle up on the couch and let’s chat.

Keeping it Local

As with most entertainment data by state, we found some evidence suggesting we prefer a taste of home. The following states had favorite shows that were set in the same locale.

Bloodline (drama set in the Florida Keys)
Alabama
Florida
North Carolina
South Carolina
House of Cards (political drama set in Washington D.C.)
District of Columbia
Last Chance U (docuseries set in East Mississippi Community College)
Mississippi
The Get Down (music drama set in South Bronx)
New York
Hemlock Grove (thriller set in small town Pennsylvania)
West Virginia
The Ranch (sitcom set in rural Colorado)
Wyoming

Here Comes the Sun

When the North settles in to watch Netflix, subscribers tend to choose warmer locales. The following states can have cold winters with heavy snowfall, but their favorite series serves up the sunny side of life.
  • Massachusetts and Rhode Island tune into Love to see a slice of LA living.
  • Connecticut keeps warm with Bloodline, set in the sunshine state of Florida.
  • Montana and Washington leave snowflakes behind in favor of Flaked, featuring plenty of California’s signature palm trees.
  • Wisconsin heats things up with the explosive Lady Dynamite, whose heroine is a comedian looking for laughs in Los Angeles.
Trending Now…

Some states may not share the same favorites, but their region tends to skew towards a particular genre. The following areas of the country fell neatly into categories of content.
Drama Queens are alive and well in the South.
Daredevil, Bloodline, and Orange is the New Black reigned across much of the southern United States.
It’s Always Sunny with comedy in the Pacific West.
Flaked and W/ Bob & David were two prominent choices along the West Coast.
Lighten it up with laughter in the North.
Flaked, W/ Bob & David, Love, and Lady Dynamite were scattered across the northern United States, suggesting there isn’t anything that a little comedy sketch can’t cure.
Superheroes save the day in the Midwest.
Daredevil and Jessica Jones are favorites in the middle of the country. Apparently some parts of the
U.S. are still looking for a hero.

New England has love to keep it warm.
Sense8, Love, and Jessica Jones all focus on relationships, human or otherwise, and are popular in New England, where their trademark cynicism doesn’t extend to TV content.
Keeping it clean for the kids in the Mountain West.
PG-rated fare is favored in states like Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming, including Stranger Things, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and The Ranch, which are all acceptable for younger viewers.

Fangirl Thoughts: It is interesting to see what people are watching across the US. I am a huge fan of Daredevil and can understand how Jersey would be about Daredevil. I hope we continue to get trends like this so we can see how the climate changes in the US.
