Movie Review: Wonder Woman

Let me get straight to the point. Wonder Woman is a great film in any genre, not only superhero fare. It trades overproduced action sequences for a coherent, evenly paced story-line. It relies less on expository and quick quip dialogue and instead lets its characters develop and act based on their established traits. And most importantly, for the DCMU (DC Movie Universe) in particular, it finally found the right mix of seriousness while allowing its cast to breathe, laugh, and, yes, smile!

Wonder Woman took its main cue from Man of Steel in setting up the very unearthly aspects of Princess Diana of Themyscira, but it learned to not dwell on them. Diana is very proud of her heritage, and although she doesn’t fit in and is saddened by the state of “man’s world”, she doesn’t spend any considerable amount of time dealing with an existential crisis built on that alienation. She has been ready for action since she was a child and that is what occupies her mind – the only thing that’s changed is the surrounding environment: paradisaical Themyscira is switched for a dark and grey World War - Europe.

This readiness for action is what drives the movie and its main protagonists. It wants to explore Wonder Woman’s heroic motives, but it does a great job of not lingering laboriously on this. She has a heart to care for mankind; it’s simple and straight-forward. Her actions are a manifestation of that. And even when she questions mankind, it makes sense as a direct reaction to something that has happened, and not some pseudo-heady post-modern dilemma.

While the plot sails along smoothly, and each set piece is well woven into the story, the movie does falter in one important aspect: it fails to create any real tension. The final act becomes especially tedious due to this. It relies on our investment on Diana’s choice whether to believe mankind is worth fighting for or not. As we all probably know the answer to that, these final scenes can’t help but be structurally anti-climatic. The main villain, who is not well established, offers no immediate threat and ends up simply being an agent to get her to say silly lines like, “I believe in love!”

But in the end that is what this movie is concerned with: telling us why Diana stuck around Earth and is willing to fight for us. It’s a well constructed enough backbone to stand on that the lack of, “how will they get out of this one,” set pieces doesn’t hurt the overall quality of the movie.

Taking these minor flaws aside, Wonder Woman is a triumph for the big screen – and should be considered the benchmark for the DCMU. It’s their most confident and complete story, not relying on CGI-heavy effects or action sequences every five minutes to make us forget there is no plot (or that the plot is too confusing to follow for anyone outside the core DC-fanbase). It finally gets the tone correct – keeping the real-world seriousness of Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman while adding the more light-hearted aspects of Suicide Squad to the mix. And most applause-worthy (for a movie in any genre), it produces a female hero who is fully rounded, who likes to kick butt as much as she likes her hair beautiful – who isn’t afraid to fall in love.

Hollywood take note, being a female hero does not always have to equate to being a sexless, emotionless, pseudo-man with breasts. Wonder Woman is a girl-power movie without having to shout “girl-power” once. It’s better for it, and hopefully future superhero films with female leads will be too.

I definitely recommend catching Wonder Woman on the big screen. Warner Bros. did the right thing by listening to the fan criticism and putting out the movie that we wanted to see. I have no doubt that this movie will be a huge hit, and no doubt that her future films are open to limitless possibilities. As an origin story, I rank this nearly as high as Batman Begins – and we all know what followed after that. Look out Marvel, Warner Bros. and the DCMU has finally arrived to the games.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle Trailer Review

IMDB Storyline: When the Kingsman’s headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman. This alliance dates back to the day they were founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents’ strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that’s becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy.

Fangirl Thoughts: The sequel to the over the top original looks like it plans to take it to the next level. The new installment will now have the beautiful Halle Berry and Channing Tatum. While watching the trailer you see that Tatum is just perpetuating the stereotype that American’s are cowboys with his cowboy hat but it is what it is. I will be watching this movie because it looks like so much fun. I hope that it brings the fun cut scenes that were in the original with the fantastic sound track.

Will you be watching?

Movie Review: The Fate of the Furious

AMC Storyline: Now that Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game and the rest of the crew has been exonerated; the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. Then a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and finds himself betraying those closest to him. Our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

Fangirl Thoughts: This movie is everything you would expect it to be. Hot guys, chicks, and cars and the outright disregard for physics is what the series is about and this latest installment keeps that going. I enjoyed the over the top testosterone of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Stathum. I enjoyed watching the team bumble along while going up against Dom. Overall it’s a solid movie.

Gripes (Spoiler filled) Sometimes the movie ignores logic and physics too much. Five cars take on one car and that one car is able to flip the 5 other cars. I do not care how Dom modded that car, he cannot win like that I am sorry. Also Dom’s baby out of nowhere….no! I am trying to think back to the previous movies and I am sorry but Dom was with Elena in Fast 5 and we see her in 6 and 7 so someone please break down the timeline that she was pregnant and not showing. Also the sports cars driving on ice and not spinning out like we all know they should have. I only saw the enemies’ tires with chains on them. Anyone who drives on ice and snow know that you have to drive with sense and you will not be able to stop on a dime. And a few cars cannot stop a wall of fire and that’s all I am going to say about that.

What did you think of the movie? I gave it a solid 7.5 out of 10.

Movie Review: Beauty and the Beast 2017

Hollywood's obsession with remakes and reboots can get damn right annoying (even if they do hit the mark every once in a while) but the live action version of Beauty and The Beast is not a remake or reboot in the traditional sense – it is more an homage to the 1991 classic Disney animated film. There was little attempt to play with the story line and some camera shots are reproduced exactly like the original.

From going around the web forums, I noticed that this copycat style irked some people, but I believe Disney was extremely clear with their intentions about what this film would and wouldn't be way before we got the first teaser trailer – it was a live action version of a animated film we all cherished – their attention to detail in the replication was astounding and I was very happy with the result.

There are some extra layers to this movie that the original animated film didn't have, though, mainly in how it rounds out some of the characters. Belle is still charming but there is the shadow of her mother's death which surrounds her and adds a slight sadness to her smile. Her father also come off as more than just a weird village dweller, especially when the film explores how he came to be a single father.

Gaston was also more three dimensional and interesting than in the animated movie – his adoration from the village as well as his manic episodes are better explained and seem to both spring from his time in the war.

The Beast was the character that I felt could have had a few more layers – the animated version allowed him to have many more facial expression (especially in the eyes) and bits of dialogue to express his growing affection for Belle and his own uncertainty about his future if the spell were to remain on his castle forever.

Beast's enchanted helpers were also more endearing in the Disney cartoon due to the animator's ability to add extra facial quirks – the CGI versions are a bit harsher and gives the castle a more somber mood. I felt this was a directorial choice though – the animated movie made the castle servants all too cheery for such a dire situation – these versions were still hopeful but understood what the spell could mean for them in the end. They had the emotional edge that the Beast lacked in this version.

These are minor gripes though and it in no way affected my level of enjoyment for the finished product. Beauty and the Beast is beautifully filmed, sung, acted, and produced. The classic numbers sounded crisp as ever and the new songs (though not as grand) didn't take anything away from the stand-bys. The movie was made with its heart worn on its sleeve.

Much like last year's surprise hit musical, La La Land, Beauty and the Beast didn't try to upgrade anything or modernize their dance numbers – they kept to a traditional musical script and banked on the audience's love for the original production and a the desire that any movie goer has to enter a movie theater to be marveled. I enjoy this non-cynical approach because I am too much of a cynic – and I also wonder now if the traditional musical won't slowly make a come back as audiences are proving that they are more than willing to spend money to watch these spectacles.

Although the movie has a few bits that lag towards the middle – as both Beast and Belle are afforded visual expositions about their past instead of dialogue which builds character – these scenes are short and set piece after set piece remind us of how Disney cares about their audience and their creative property. If you loved the original animated film you will be dazzled – if you think a near shot for shot reproduction is unnecessary you may still come away smiling. I highly recommend this film for an older generation and a newer generation alike.

Movie Review: Logan

Critters Corner 👍👍👍👍

IMDB Storyline: In 2029 the mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine. She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins - In this third cinematic outing featuring the Marvel comic book character Wolverine we see the superheroes beset by everyday problems. They are ageing, ailing and struggling to survive financially. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining...

Sadly, the movie LOGAN marks the end of Hugh Jackman's brilliant career as X-Men's Wolverine. That may be true for Patrick Stewart's portrayal of Charles Xavier, the most powerful mind on the planet Professor X. The two of them were in the mutant Marvel Universe for 17 years. Arguably the longest of two actors to play heroes. Logan is the fitting way to say goodbye to iconic actors in their roles.

The movie should thank the highly successful and profitable movie Deadpool from 2016 for the studio to go all out in this fond farewell with a rated R. Logan is a family movie (WTF DID YOU SAY)! Yes, it is about family and the crap we endure for their care and SURVIVAL.

The movie begins with old broken Logan who has taken on the mantle to care for Charles with the assistant of another (no spoilers here). He has plans to keep them safe when unexpectedly a little girl appears and unravels their lives. The movie is brutal and it is not for the faint of heart. Beyond the gore and cussing is a story of beloved comic characters in a setting that's fits what the previous X-Men movies attempted to communicate poorly.

Mutants are extremely hated and yet their abilities though feared are in obsessive demand by the very same people who despise them. This movie is not your regular cape, cowl mask with spandex leather cinema. It's dirty, filthy, grimy look at what really happens to individuals broken from prejudice, fear, and persecution. However difficult the film is with in your face slicing and dicing pain between X-23, Logan. and the people chasing them; there are a few moments of brief humor, joy, and finally love for what you are given and the people you choose to accept as family.

The chemistry between the professor and his pupil is nothing less than father and son. The same is felt eventually with Wolverine and X-23. There is so much in this finale that is so well done I can say without a doubt that Logan is the best movie thus far from the Marvel Universe. I highly recommend Logan for all adults and mature teens (due to the R rating). It is an incredible depiction of how Wolverine and Mutants are painfully portrayed in comics. You will not be disappointed.

Netflix Cheating is on the Rise Globally and Shows No Signs of Stopping

New data reveals 46% of streaming couples around the world are watching ahead of their partners and most only plan to cheat more.

No relationship is safe. According to a new study* released by Netflix, nearly half (46%) of streaming couples around the world have “cheated” on their significant other, but it’s not what you think.

Defined as watching a TV show ahead of your significant other, Netflix cheating was first uncovered in a study in the U.S. in 2013. Four years later, cheating has increased three times[1] and has become a common behavior around the world. This behavior only continues to grow with 60% of consumers saying they’d cheat more if they knew they’d get away with it. And once you cheat, you can’t stop: 81% of cheaters are repeat offenders and 44% have cheated 3+ times.

In a binge-watching world where it’s easy to say ‘just one more,’ Netflix cheating has quickly become the new normal...

WHERE IS CHEATING HAPPENING? (EVERYWHERE)
Cheating happens all over the world….though it varies a bit by country. The most cheaters are in Brazil and Mexico where 57%-58% of streaming couples have cheated, respectively. The most loyal viewers are in Netherlands (73% have not cheated), Germany (65%) and Poland (60%).

WHAT SHOWS ARE WE CHEATING ON? (ALL OF THEM)
While no show is off limits, top cheating temptations are The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, American Horror Story, House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Narcos, and Stranger Things.

WHY DO WE CHEAT? (WE JUST CAN’T HELP IT)
Most don’t plan to cheat...it just happens: 80% of cheating is unplanned. The trigger for the growing trend in cheating? Two-thirds (66%) of cheaters said that “the shows are just so good we can’t stop bingeing.”

HOW DO WE CHEAT? (ANY WAY WE CAN)
Sleep with one eye open: 25% of cheating happens when one partner falls asleep. But whether this is even cheating is hotly debated. Half say “sleep cheating” doesn’t count (53%), but the morality of “sleep cheating” varies across the globe. Chileans think it’s no big deal, Japan sees it as unforgivable. Many are still cheating in secret: 45% never admit to their indiscretions.

IS CHEATING SO BAD? (DEPENDS WHERE YOU LIVE)
If you stray, don’t beat yourself up about it. Cheating has become more socially acceptable, with 46% saying it’s “not bad at all.” Unless of course you live in Hong Kong, where 40% think watching ahead of your partner is worse than having an actual affair.

IS MY PARTNER A CHEATER? (SPOILER ALERT: MOST LIKELY)
Cheating comes in many forms. Netflix has created a series of assets to help explain the phenomenon. Cheating Profiles highlight the most common types of offenders lurking in households around the world. This infographic illustrates cheating motivations and behaviors, and reaction GIFs help couples work through their indiscretions so they can protect their relationship...or keep on cheating.

Movie Trailer Review: King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

The movie is based on the King Arthur story starring Charlie Hunnam as Arthur. Kamil Lemieszewski as Merlin, Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Guinevere, Dijmon Honsou as Sir Bedivere, Eric Bana as Uther Pendragon, and Jude Law as Vortigern.

IMDB Storyline: The young Arthur runs the back passages of Londonium with his crew, not knowing his royal lineage until he grabs Excalibur. Instantly confronted by the sword's influence, Arthur is forced to make up his mind. He joins the rebellion and meets a shadowy young woman named Guinevere, he must learn to understand the magic weapon, deal with his demons, and unite the people to defeat the dictator Vortigern, the man who murdered his parents and stole his crown to become king.

The movie appears to take some leeway with the King Arthur storyline and there does not appear to be a Lancelot or Morgan Le Fey. Those two characters add a lot of story so I am sure the writers wanted to keep from having the viewers get lost in too much storyline.

It is slated for release on May 12th, 2017 with an estimated budget of $102,000,000. If you factor in the star power and Guy Ritchie as the director, the movie should be able to make its money back plus who doesn’t enjoy the King Arthur tale especially starring Hunnam. As long as he does not end up being Jax Teller with a sword.

First Look at Ocean’s 8

If you are confused if this is maybe another sequel to the widely popular Ocean’s Eleven and wondering why it is not called Ocean’s 14 then let me be the one to inform you that it is in fact a remake of Ocean’s Eleven starring and all female cast. In the classic Ocean’s Eleven, the story focused on some of the best thieves who pull off the ultimate heist in a Las Vegas Casino. In this version it will be starring Sandra Bullock in the all-female reboot and will be titled Ocean’s 8.

I know you may be nervous about this reboot but take a moment and look at the widely popular and successful reboot of The Ghostbusters. If this movie happens to be just as successful then we may be in store for more reboots of this nature.

Details of the movie are a bit on the small side but here is what we do know:

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) will be assembling a specialized team to pull off one of the greatest heists of all time. The score is the Met Gala in New York City. I am sure we will be given examples of how it was never done before or how people failed in the most spectacular ways possible. The photo released for Ocean’s 8 gives us fans the chance to scrutinize and speculate about all involved.

In the photo we have Cate Blanchett who will be Lou and rumors are that her and Bullock will be the leads of the group and basically playing the Rusty and Danny characters. Keep in mind that Matt Damon will be making an appearance as Linus so it should be interesting to see how this plays and who exactly Debbie Ocean is in relation to Danny Ocean. Hopefully they are siblings which will be fun to see that dynamic in future movies if we are lucky.

Sarah Paulson (Tammy) looks like a well put together thief that probably has the most amazing skills. The question is how does she know Lou and Ocean and why does she feel the need to join the group and go for this crazy heist. Sarah Paulson is known for her various roles in American Horror Story. Next in the picture we have Anne Hathaway as Daphne Kluger. I do not know about you but every time I hear Hathaway’s name I think of the Princess Diaries. We all know that she is so much more than that role and her portrayal as Catwoman had fans seeing a more criminal side to her so have faith that she can be a top notch thief in this reboot as well. Frankly it would be no surprise if she ends up in a cat suit at some point during the movie.

Rihanna will be playing Nine Ball and with a name like that she must bring some very unique skills to the team. Is she the computer expert or the demolition man; either way it should be interesting to see Rihanna flex her acting chops yet again on the big screen. Awkwafina (Constance) is pretty in pink in the picture and may be the wild card of the bunch. Mindy Kaling (Amita) seems like the true con artist of the group and will bring a great presence to the cast. Last but not least, Helena Bonham Carter as Rose rounds out the group of thieves. She will probably be the most enjoyable to watch on screen and frankly will bring a lot of fans to the movies.

At this point there is very little known about the film but the movie will have a heavy amount of celebrity appearances from Anna Wintour, to Kim Kardashian, to Kylie Jenner. The movie will be at the MET Gala so the potential for celebrities strolling the red carpet through this movie is huge.

So what did you think of the first glimpse into Ocean’s 8? Leave your comments below.

Movie Review: iBoy

Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (IMDB): After being shot while calling for help trying to stop a violent attack on a high school girl, a 16 year old boy awakens from a coma to discover that fragments of his smart phone have embedded in his brain, giving him super powers. He uses this knowledge and technology to exact revenge on the gang responsible for the attack.

This film is based on a book of the same name written by Kevin Brooks. I admit, I have not read the book and I am interested to see how the book is in relation to the movie. The film itself is actually pretty good. It is shot like an indie film and uses the CG in interesting and subtle ways. Now being completely honest the mere fact that a person is shot in the head and pieces of his phone get embedded in his brain and said person survives is ridiculous in and of itself. I totally admit that, however, the strength of the movie lies with the characters. The setting for this movie is England and from what I can only guess is a housing project. There is a gang going around terrorizing the city and crime is on the rise. Tom, our resident geek turned hero, longs for the affections of his classmate Lucy which everyone in school knows. Lucy asks him to come over one night and when he goes to see her she is being assaulted. Terrified he runs and tries to call for help when he is shot by the worlds most horrible shot. Even though the movie stars a mostly young cast they do not shy away from adult themes. Lucy is the victim of a gang rape and the movie goes on to show the effect it has on her. Maisie Williams, is awesome in this role. If you don’t know who that is, it’s Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. It’s here that the movie turns into a revenge movie. As Tom learns he has these abilities he figures out who hurt Lucy and in return he sets out to destroy their lives through various means. The other thing that I like about this movie is the fact that Tom’s revenge does have consequences and he finds this out the hard way. It’s very interesting to see this kid who is obviously a geek do something about a horrible situation only to realize that he really didn’t think it all the way through. I also like how just because Tom now has powers they didn’t turn him into this ridiculous martial artist/MI-6 agent. They kept him the geek that can’t take a punch and that gets genuinely scared when he is in way to deep.

As much as I liked this movie I did have a few problems with it. It is important to note that this is a British movie. By British I mean thick British accents are all over the place. It’s not a problem in most of the film but there are a couple of key scenes where it is hard to understand what the actors are saying. If you saw Kingsmen it is basically the Pub scene all over again. Also the main villain does not show his face until the very end of the film and I really just didn’t care. He wasn’t that threatening to me, as you literally meet him for about fifteen minutes and the movie is over. To me, they should have let his lieutenant be the main villain of the film as you spend a little more time with him. One other thing that I found to be odd is that it is never explained how the gang figures out his powers. The last thing that I noticed was that the editing was off in certain scenes. It isn’t atrocious but it is noticeable especially towards the end of the movie.

For Parents

This movie is rated TV-MA for Mature audiences. Outside of the rape scene which you never fully see, I don’t think that it’s a bad movie for teens and up to see. There is scenes of violence and one of the gang members dies in a truly jacked up way but I don’t think that its that bad. The movie is paced very well and clocks in at an hour and a half. The movie does have a twist in it that I did not see coming and they kind of left it open for a sequel. It’s really interesting to me how they ended this one.

Final Verdict
I enjoyed this movie. I liked the story and the acting. Outside of those two scenes where I couldn’t understand what was being said I thought that was done great. The CG also wasn’t bad as this movie only had a budget of 1.5 million dollars. I gave this a 4 out of 5 stars on Netflix.

Movie Trailer Review: Logan

The final installment in the Wolverine movies has released a second trailer. Starring Hugh Jackman as Logan, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Dafne Keen as X-23.

IMDB Storyline: In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Seeing Wolverine as a caretaker for Professor X is interesting enough but to add in a little girl at least makes the movie more appealing. The first trailer was a bit sketchy but the second trailer appears to explain the premise a bit more and allows for the viewer to become more invested in the final movie. The fact that the girl is basically Wolverine in a nicer package should make for a good installment. Although after reading that last sentence makes one wonder if this is their way of bringing a new spin to the Wolverine franchise by making her female and now you can appeal to a younger audience. The potential for more money from the series is just a pen-stroke away.

The movie is slated for a March 3rd, 2017 release with an estimated budget of $127,000,000. As it is the last one and is a Wolverine movie, it should easily make the budget back.

Movie Trailer: T2 Trainspotting

Yes, you read the title correctly. The movie will be a continuation of the Trainspotting Saga reuniting the original characters twenty years later.

The original cast is back and are better than ever if you can consider addiction better than ever.

IMDB Storyline: First there was an opportunity......then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle). Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.

T2 Trainspotting Official Trailer - http://bit.ly/2kctb4V

Looks like it will be an interesting ride with madness, drugs, a weird bathroom scene, and just overall mayhem. It will be a short but chaotic experience of only one hour and fifty-seven minutes. The movie is slated for a release of March 17th, 2017. Be prepared, I think that is the only thing can be said about a Trainspotting sequel. One might need to rewatch the original just to be prepared for the journey.

Movie Review: Underworld: Blood Wars

IMDB Storyline: The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Fangirl Thoughts: Okay so I went into watching this movie admitting that I was seeing it because of my girl crush on Kate Beckinsale. She looks just as amazing as she did in the last movie and is still kicking butt. I thought this was going to be another crap movie and that I would only enjoy it because I am a die hard Underworld fan. However I was surprised that I liked it because it was actually a decent action/horror movie.

The fight sequences were amazing like always and learning more on the vampire history and hierarchy was great. I also enjoyed the ending. I think it was most fitting and frankly I would support if they decide to make another movie. And yes they did leave it open that if the movie did well enough that they could make another movie.

I do not want to spoil the movie for you so go check it out. If you enjoy the series, then you will enjoy this movie.
