JEFF LEMIRE’S “Black Hammer” Ongoing Series Back on Track

After a series delay, Dark Horse Comics is proud to announce the return of Xeric Award–winning and Eisner, Ignatz, and Harvey Award–nominated cartoonist JEFF LEMIRE and artist DEAN ORMSTON’s much-anticipated original ongoing series BLACK HAMMER.

From the prodigious brain of Lemire (Descender, Sweet Tooth, Essex County, A.D.: After Death, Plutona) comes Black Hammer, a character-based superhero drama amazingly brought to life by Ormston (Lucifer, The Sandman) with colors by none other than Eisner Award–winning veteran Dave Stewart.

Nintendo Provides Updates on Mobile, NX and The Legend of Zelda

- Nintendo announced a variety of updates during the earnings announcement for its full fiscal year, ended March 31. These updates included the first information about Nintendo’s next video game system, code-named NX.

“As we report the results of the last fiscal year, we also look forward to an exciting period ahead with further growth in our mobile business, new products for our dedicated video game systems and continued progress in our efforts to increase the number of consumers experiencing our IP through games, licensing and expanded entertainment,” said Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima.

For a complete overview of Nintendo’s financial announcements, as well as changes to Nintendo’s governance system, please visit Nintendo’s Investor Relations website at https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en. Announcement highlights include:

  • Miitomo: Nintendo’s first app for smartphones and tablets has already crossed 10 million unique users worldwide. The free-to-start social experience app launched in Japan on March 17 and in a variety of other countries, including the United States, on March 31. In the United States, Miitomo reached #1 free app status in its various online stores shortly after release. Along with these outstanding user numbers, Nintendo also has, to date, sparked more than 300 million conversations in Miitomo. In addition, users can insert their Mii characters into photos to create unique “Miifotos” that can be shared through various social media. As of now, more than 20 million Miifotos have been created. To celebrate Miitomo hitting 10 million users, Nintendo will run a special 10-day “Celebrating 10 Million Users!” promotion April 29-May 8.
  • Nintendo’s Next Mobile Apps: Building on the positive consumer reaction to Miitomo, Nintendo announced that its next two mobile apps would be based on the familiar and beloved Fire Emblem and Animal Crossingfranchises. Nintendo plans to release both of these applications this fall. As for the former app, while making it more accessible in comparison to the Fire Emblem games for Nintendo’s dedicated gaming systems, Nintendo aims to offer the great value of a role-playing strategy game. Nintendo will design the latter game so that it will be connected with the world of Animal Crossingfor dedicated gaming systems. By playing both Animal Crossing games, users will find increased enjoyment. Both of these are pure game applications. Compared to Miitomo, they have more prominent game elements, and the game content will tie closely into Nintendo’s dedicated games business. Nintendo will provide more details about these applications closer to their launch period, and aims to have multiple types of apps that appeal to different audiences and different groups of players.
  • NX: Nintendo previously announced that it would release more information about its next system, code-named NX, this year. As the first announcement of any NX information, Nintendo confirmed that NX is scheduled to launch in March 2017. NX will not make an appearance at the upcoming E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles in June and will be unveiled later this year.
  • The Legend of Zelda: The latest installment in this classic franchise is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both Wii U and NX, and both versions of the game have been in development in tandem. Because developers need more time to polish the game, it will launch in 2017, but it will be the focus of Nintendo’s presence at E3.
  • E3: Nintendo changes its approach to the show every year. This June, Nintendo will focus its attentions on the upcoming game in The Legend of Zelda franchise. The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion. Additional information about Nintendo’s E3 plans will be announced in the future.

SHE WOLF LEAVES READERS HOWLING FOR MORE

The new series will be love at first bite for fans. SHE WOLF, by fan-favorite cartoonist Rich Tommaso (DARK CORRIDOR) will lead the pack this June with a chilling, fever-dream mystery that will keep fans hooked from page one.

A surreal exploration in horror, SHE WOLF follows a teenage girl who believes she's been bitten by a savage werewolf. Soon after, she begins to experience feverish nightmares that seamlessly bleed into her everyday reality.

"This is the most surreal thing I've ever written—a horror tale about a teenage werewolf who uses witchcraft to become a higher level of demon," said Tommaso. "The backdrop is Sparta, New Jersey—where I grew up during the wild '80s. As strange as this story is, the tiny parts that ARE autobiographical are more vivid blended into this mysterious world than some of the 100% straight-auto-bio comics I've done in the past."

SHE WOLF #1 will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, June 22nd.

Be a Hero in Star Fox Zero!

Hop Into the Pilot’s Seat for an Intense Space Adventure in Star Fox Zero for Wii U. ALERT! ALERT! This is not a drill! The galaxy as we know it is in jeopardy! The evil Andross has taken over the Lylat System and only you and the Star Fox crew can stop them! The Star Fox Zero game is now available exclusively for Wii U consoles, so pin on your pilot wings and dry clean your flight suit – it’s time to report for duty in this action-packed interplanetary adventure.

“Star Fox Zero is a game that’s only possible through the second-screen experience of the Wii U GamePad,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Many video game fans have experienced the Star Fox series through the years, but never with this level of full-throttle action.”The Star Fox series makes its Wii U debut in Star Fox Zero, once again reuniting leader Fox McCloud with his memorable team composed of hotshot Falco Lombardi, reliable Peppy Hare and engineer Slippy Toad. For this new adventure, you take on the role of Fox McCloud as he pilots multiple transforming vehicles using a unique control scheme that lets you shoot in one direction while flying in another. Star Fox Zero is the first game in the series to employ independent controls for flying and aiming your lasers. By looking at the TV to identify your target and using the motion controls on the Wii U GamePad controller to aim and shoot with precision, the game lets players feel like they are right in the pilot’s seat, especially when using the game’s “3D Voice” feature to hear squad-mate audio directly from the GamePad.

Co-created by Nintendo and PlatinumGames, developers of the Bayonetta series,Star Fox Zero provides the planet-hopping action that fans have come to love, while introducing new vehicles, missions and a unique control scheme. In addition to flying the now-iconic Arwing vehicle, you can also pilot the ground-based Landmaster Tank and new GyroWing, a hovering drone ideal for stealth-based missions. The Arwing can also transform into the bipedal Walker, allowing for further exploration in the game’s varied levels.

The levels in Star Fox Zero aren’t just about going from point A to point B. Many of the game’s gorgeous locales contain secret exits and hidden collectibles, inviting you to retry missions to discover everything. Just like previous Star Fox games, exploring and discovering new things is part of the fun. By using your stellar piloting skills, you can destroy as many enemies as possible to try to get the highest score. You can even have another player sync up a Wii U Pro controller or Wii Remote controller and Nunchuk (sold separately) and assist in missions by flying the Arwing while you aim and shoot using the motion controls of the GamePad to take out even more enemies.

Star Fox fans are in for a special treat by tapping a Fox or Falco amiibo figure (sold separately). Tapping the Super Smash Bros. series Fox amiibo replaces the normal Arwing with a low-polygon Retro Arwing from the Super Nintendo days (complete with retro music for Corneria). Tapping the Falco amiibo unlocks a special Black Arwing: a high-powered spacecraft created for brave pilots willing to fly with very little shielding.

Every retail version of Star Fox Zero also comes with the Star Fox Guard game on a second disc. This fun and frantic game finds you defending a mining facility owned by Grippy Toad (Slippy’s uncle) from waves of enemy robots using the second screen on the Wii U GamePad controller. A full-fledged Star Fox experience in its own right, Star Fox Guard features 100 stages for players to take on, and also allows players to create and share their own challenges with other players online.

Barrel roll into this unforgettable adventure by purchasing the game in stores at a suggested retail price of $59.99. Star Fox Guard is included in every physical version of Star Fox Zero. Both Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard can also by purchased digitally in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or at Nintendo.com for $49.99 and $14.99, respectively. If you purchase the digital version of either game separately, you will receive an automatic discount of $4.99 through Nintendo.com or Nintendo eShop upon purchase of the other game.

To learn more about the characters and story of Star Fox Zero, you can view the Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins animated short at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA2-0nTxaGg. Created in partnership with Shigeru Miyamoto, Production I.G and WIT STUDIO, the short explores the backstory behind the game and its first level, Corneria.

“Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition” launching for PC on April 27

One of the most gorgeous games of 2015 has become even more spectacular in 2016 with Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, which hit Xbox One last month. On April 27, gamers on Windows 10 and Steam will get the chance to see how this recipient of over 30 industry game awards (including numerous E3 awards, the Golden Joystick Award for Best Xbox Game, the Best Art Direction Award from The Game Awards, Outstanding Achievement in Original Composition from the D.I.C.E. Summit, The Game Developer’s Choice Award for Best Debut, the Artistic Achievement award from the BAFTAs and more) in 2015 has gotten even better.

Ori and the Blind Forest, a 2D sidescrolling platformer from developer Moon Studios, is a true visual spectacle. Players take control of the titular Ori, a guardian spirit who explores the haunting forest of Nibel – a breathtaking backdrop that imparts the magic of classic hand-drawn art with the help of some impressive tech. We asked our partners at Moon for a few thoughts on how they approached the Definitive Edition.

“Immediately after the release of Ori and the Blind Forest, we heard cries from fans asking for even more content. Instead of ‘just’ releasing DLC, we decided to craft an entirely new package that includes both the new content as well as features that fans have asked us to add to the original game. We spent almost an entire year on this new release of Ori and the Blind Forest and hope that we have now delivered the ultimate ‘Ori experience’ for all of our fans out there!”

The Definitive Edition is all about making a great game even more accessible for players; besides new areas, music, story elements, and the additional Light Burst and Dash abilities, it adds a new Easy difficulty for those who’d like to relax a little and take in the sights of Nibel. Ori can even warp between Spirit Wells, the game’s save points, which makes for a faster and more streamlined experience. Fans can also now purchase official merchandise at the new Ori and The Blind Forest shop.

Some words of thanks from the developers at Moon: “We’d like to thank everyone for the tremendous support we’ve received, it truly means a great deal to us that we’ve seen nothing but positive reviews, won many prestigious awards and all of that really motivates us to give back to our fans and do even greater things in the future.”

Nintendo and Nickelodeon Bring the Next Splatfest to a Pineapple under the Sea

Splatoon Asks SpongeBob SquarePants Fans: SpongeBob or Patrick?
What’s the best crossover under the sea? SPONGEBOB SPLATFEST!

On April 23, Nintendo is partnering with Nickelodeon to bring a SpongeBob SquarePants-themed Splatfest competition to the Splatoon game for the Wii U console. Players will be asked to declare their allegiance to either the world’s most lovable sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants, or his starfish sidekick, Patrick Star, from Nickelodeon’s animated television show SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob and Patrick will feel right at home in the squid-themed Splatoon game. Squidward was not invited.

“Two international pop culture sensations meet when theSpongeBob SquarePants Splatfest comes to Splatoon,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Fun partnerships like this take advantage of the crossover appeal that family-friendly franchises like Splatoon and SpongeBob provide. Personally, I’m team SpongeBob all the way.”

Splatfest is a recurring online competition that asks players to pick a team – in this case, either SpongeBob or Patrick. Once players choose a side, they’ll receive a free in-game T-shirt adorned with an image of SpongeBob or Patrick for their character to wear as they compete in the online multiplayer Turf War mode to see which team comes out on top. At the end of the Splatfest competition, the side with the most points is awarded Super Sea Snails (no relation to SpongeBob’s pet, Gary), items that allow them to upgrade gear in the game. The SpongeBob SquarePants Splatfest competition kicks off in Splatoonon April 23 at 6 a.m. PT and runs until April 24 at 12 p.m. PT. This also marks the first Splatfest in which players from North America and Europe can be matched together. Splatfest is open to all Wii U owners who have theSplatoon game and an Internet connection.

Splatoon, which is exclusive to Wii U, represents Nintendo’s take on the action-shooter genre. Characters called Inklings can transform into non-Squidward squids as they attempt to cover the play area with their team’s colorful ink and splat opponents. Using an array of inventive weapons, players cover the playing surface with as much of their team’s colorful ink as possible before time runs out. More than 4 million units of the game have been sold worldwide. For more information about Splatoon, visit http://splatoon.nintendo.com/.

SpongeBob SquarePants has emerged as a global pop culture phenomenon since first premiering on Nickelodeon in July 1999. The series has been the most-watched animated program for more than 14 consecutive years, and is seen in over 185 countries and translated in more than 50 languages. The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends.

Remember that Wii U features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu.

DC Super Hero Girls - New Season Out Now

DC Super Hero Girls Season Two Premieres Now: Meet the Voice of Supergirl. DC Super Hero Girls is back! Season two of the bi-weekly webseries debuted on the DC Super Hero Girls website and YouTube channel, and the Super Hero High roster has gained some new faces. Inspired by Wonder Woman, Supergirl overcame her fears and enrolled in the exciting high school. The Kryptonian hero was introduced in the recent television special on Boomerang and will continue to find her way in the upcoming season. We spoke with the voice behind Supergirl, Anais Fairweather, and she says Supergirl is trying to determine her path.

"Her dynamic is that she really is genuinely learning about herself and learning about the other girls at the school and wanting to take something from all of them,” says Fairweather. “I really believe she wants to learn from each one of them in their own way and become close to them and find her home here because she's so far away from her actual home. I could really feel that sense of her wanting to find her place." Supergirl obviously has impressive abilities and super powers at her disposal, but it doesn't mean she's invincible. Like the other students at Super Hero High, she's growing up and that comes with its own hurdles and lessons. She has flaws, and she's figuring things out. The characters' human, relatable traits are one aspect about DC Super Hero Girls that makes the series appealing to kids (along with adults, if we're being honest) and so is the friendship between the girls. Fairweather likes how the show emphasizes that.

"I think so much of the time we're seeing women on television being pinned against each other, and it's so wonderful to have this show for young women so that they can see other women supporting each other and building each other up. It's important," she says. Fairweather also sees the effect of the series firsthand in her personal life. "I have a niece who's four years old and she loves the show,” she explains. “I'm so glad she finally has something that she can connect to. This is one of the first things like this, and it's so, so great for her. I see her running around the house pretending to be Supergirl with the cape on, and she's got her little arm ahead of her and she's flying through the dining room. It makes me feel emotional because I'm just so, so glad that we live in a world where this is happening and she gets to see this and want to embody these girls who are wonderful characters. Any possible chance to empower young women, that's genuinely my goal in life. It feels so good to be a part of this."

As mentioned, Supergirl has a few challenges to wrestle with, but her biggest one doesn't have to do with saving the day or world, it has do with believing in herself. Fairweather thinks that's definitely Supergirl's struggle.  "You see her constantly coming up against herself and questioning herself. Is she powerful enough? Is she ready? Does she have enough training? I think the biggest thing for her is really believing in herself. I so badly want young girls to believe in themselves and to take risks and to not let people stand in their way. It's so important to trust and to know that you can do this. I think a big thing is to call on help and to not be afraid to ask people for help. I think another one of her challenges is to not apologize so much."

DC Super Hero Girls is a biweekly webseries and debuts new episodes on the DC Super Hero Girls website and YouTube channel every other Thursday.

New Styles for New Threats in Monster Hunter Generations

A brand new Monster Hunter means brand new threats, and new threats means players must adapt to the hunt with new skills. Coming Summer 2016, the recently-announced new action RPG Monster Hunter Generations introduces gameplay mechanics known as Styles and Hunter Arts to allow for an even more visually striking and personalized playstyle than ever before on Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

Each hunting Style opens up different ways to tactically take on foes. Each Style also allows access to different Hunter Arts, indispensable combat skills and power-ups that can be unleashed with the tap of a button when charged, making it easy to execute these special moves.

The four Style options include:
  • Aerial Style – Adds a new jumping ability which allows players to attack from above, opening up more opportunities to mount a monster and potentially knock it down.
  • Guild Style – Classic gameplay for all 14 weapons and will feel familiar to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate players.
  • Adept Style – Rewards players for learning enemy behaviors and performing a counterattack, giving players more tactical dodging and blocking options based on the current weapon type in use.

New map and special infected enemy revealed for Umbrella Corps!

Capcom confirmed details and released new assets for the upcoming Umbrella Corps. A brand new map based on the Antarctic Base from Resident Evil Code: Veronica and an additional “Mutated Zombie” creature type are infecting the title when it releases on June 21, 2016.

The Antarctic Base, set within the Umbrella research facility, was never repaired after the deadly T-virus incident witnessed in Resident Evil Code: Veronica. The base remains in its heavily destroyed state, featuring a vertically expansive play area covering three floors that allow players to endure a thrilling fast-paced round of hide and seek gameplay. Perhaps the most tactical map in the game, players can utilize cover points, interwoven ventilation ducts, and ladders to unleash deadly surprise attacks on their foes.

Also being added into the shooting mayhem are the special “Mutated Zombies” that can be found in the single player Experiment Mode’s Antarctic Base map and in the Multi-Mission Mode’s SP DNA Hunter ruleset. Featuring advanced states of mutation, there are many viruses spreading across the infected zones in Umbrella Corps and it’s unclear whether the T-virus or C-virus is responsible for these blood thirsty enemies. Harder to defeat than normal zombies, not only are they unaffected by the Zombie Jammer, but they are also able to render the Zombie Jammer temporarily ineffective against other creatures near the player.

“Rat Queens” Kurtis Wiebe Brings “Bounty” This Summer

KICK ASS! SHOOT FIRST! GET PAID! Dark Horse Comics is happy to announce that Rat Queens Eisner Award-nominated writer Kurtis Wiebe is bringing his latest creator-owned series to readers this summer with the arrival of Bounty #1.

This ongoing series sees Wiebe join forces with pop-comic sensation Mindy Lee to present a femme-fatale sci-fi caper of epic proportions!

“Bounty is strongly my voice and one of my favourite comics I've ever written,” says Wiebe. “While it's about sisters who hunt criminals in the future, it is ultimately about the nature of family and the trust we share with those closest to us. With a little bit of action and romance on the side. What Mindy Lee is doing with the art is unlike anything I've seen in comics before.”

The Gadflies were the most wanted criminals in the galaxy. Over the years, they’d stolen from the galaxy’s most evil corporations and redistributed their ill-gotten gains to the less fortunate. Doing so earned them a reputation as the roughest outlaws in the universe—with a bounty to match! Now, with the law closing in on them, the Gadflies are forced to abandon their bandit personas in favor of a new career as bounty hunters . . . ’cause if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em—then rob ’em for all they’re worth!

It’s Rat Queens meets Firefly!

Bounty #1 debuts on July 6 and retails for $3.99. Preorder a copy today at your local comic shop.

Dark Horse, IDW, and 2000 AD team up for galactic mayhem!

Dark Horse announced three of the universe’s most feared figures cross paths this summer in the ultimate science-fiction crossover: Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens!

Written by New York Times best-selling and Eisner Award–winning author John Layman (Chew, Mars Attacks: Occupation) with stunning interior artwork by Chris Mooneyham (Five Ghosts, Predator: Fire and Stone) and iconic covers by Eisner Award winner Glenn Fabry, this series will be the wild ride of the summer for readers everywhere!

“Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens is just the sort of concept that would have Teenage John Layman wetting his pants with excitement…just at the possibility of reading it. Here, many, many years later, Old Man Layman is writing it, and it’s still every bit as thrilling,” remarked writer John Layman.

The crossover pits the legendary lawman Judge Dredd against the universe’s supreme hunters, the Predators, as they both try to survive an onslaught by the galaxy’s ultimate killing machines, the Aliens!

Judge Dredd and Judge Anderson have tracked a criminal cult across the Cursed Earth and into the Alabama morass, where a mad genetic scientist with destructive designs has acquired the best genes that evolution has to offer—a xenomorph skull!

A Predator, attracted to the warm climate and superior prey, has declared hunting season as he calls for backup. All paths will cross in a mind-blowing sci-fi showdown with the fate of the Earth at stake!

“This really is a dream-come-true project for me. I got to work on Aliens once before—a super cool experience, and one that was always on my creative bucket list. Dredd’s been on the bucket list as well, and you throwPredator into the mix, and it’s a trifecta of awesome. I’m loving every minute of this project so far,” added Layman.

Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens #1 (of 4) is in stores July 27, 2016. Preorder your copy today at your local favorite comic shop.
