Movie Review: Fantastic Four (2015)

IMDB Storyline: FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Critter's Corner: The 2015 Fantastic Four Movie was suppose to be a fresh reboot of one of the most successful teams in the Marvel Universe. Instead it will be remembered as this summer's flop that has left data dumps of collateral damage from the Director, Studio, and Actors. However, this fallout should not be a surprise to anyone including the fans. If you decide to create a movie in a black box or you do not utilize the comics for source materials then this is the end result. Josh Trank and 20th Century Fox wanted to create a new fresh look. However, there is always trouble when neither are on the same page and that is obvious throughout this film.

Transported to an alternate universe, four young students (and another) gain superpowers as they have been altered from the travel. Students Reed Richards becomes Mr. Fantastic, able to stretch and twist his body at will, while his best friend Ben Grimm gains strength as the rock like creature they call the Thing, Susan Storm (SPOILER - who did not go), gains the ability to become invisible and objects that aid in flotation, projections, shielding, and invisibility of other objects, Johnny Storm (brother of Susan), can burst into flames, shoot fireballs and fly. Together, they have to stop a friend creating a global threat; Victor Von Doom.

The movie gets no more complicated than that. The CGI was great watching the team evolve and getting control of their new powers. But that's about the best coming from this movie. The story was rushed, the actors had no chemistry among one another, and Dr. Doom was not well done at all! In fact, a couple of scenes produced laughter from the audience (not in a good way). The intimidating presence from the ruler of Latveria was more than a highly intelligent poor attitude rich student. Johnny and Susan Father (Head of the project) was more intimidating.

There were a few reaches, interdimensional travel v. space, Susan was adopted and had little to no relationship with her brother Johnny, Love triangle between Reed, Susan, and Victor was invisible and the entire Baxter Building was a research facility. Jac said it best, "the movie was too fast." The FF would have been better as a Netflix Original chopped in 8 clips because that is how the movie felt. Scenes were rushed giving the impression a ton of editing took place.

Final Thoughts: Wait for this one on DVD. Its an ambitious attempt to reboot FF and all it does becomes a great holiday rental - FLAME OFF - 2 1/2 Stars

SAINTS—A NEW CRIME-HORROR SERIES READERS WILL WORSHIP

A gritty new ongoing series blending breakneck action with occult undertones. Award-winning playwright and This American Life personality Sean Lewis teams up with red-hot artist Benjamin Mackey for an all-new ongoing series in SAINTS. Dexter-style action collides with a Preacher-esque sensibility in this crime-horror series that will launch on October 7th.

SAINTS begins when Blaise, Lucy, and Sebastian discover a Holy War is erupting and they, unwittingly, are the next generation of Saints poised to fight for a heaven that God has abandoned.

“I was drawn in the moment Ben pitched the idea to me: 'What if the Patron Saints returned to earth and their martyrdom became their superpower,” said Lewis. “I had gone to Catholic school, I'm first generation Irish-American, really deep in religious guilt—I thought it was brilliant. It's been the most fun I've had writing something because it deals with things I'm really interested in. Deep things like what people believe in and why, but also funny and frivolous things like heavy metal. The book is thoughtful, for sure, but also insanely funny. Kind of like a Dogma on steroids. That's what makes it a joy."

Mackey added: “In Saints, you have these characters, housing the souls of revered religious martyrs, that still need to eat, sleep, drink, and figure out what the hell is going on in their lives. I want to capture this balance of the contemporary mundanity with a classical sense of the monumental. Drawing on inspiration from John Singer Sargent, Giambattista Tiepolo, David Lynch, 19 Kids and Counting, Eastern Orthodox Icons, and Slipknot… I hope to create a visual milieu that although clean and simple on surface, houses a much more tumultuous interior life.”

The occult rises in this spectacular, action-packed new series that promises heavy metal, sex, and deadly one-liners at every turn.

SAINTS #1 will be available on Wednesday, October 7th.

Nintendo Wins Another Patent Case Involving Nintendo 3DS and Other Nintendo DS Systems

Nintendo won a patent case in a federal court in Washington state, which marks two such wins in separate cases just a few weeks apart. On July 9, 2015, Judge Ricardo Martinez issued a ruling in the latest case that sided with Nintendo on 10 out of 10 disputed issues regarding the scope of the patent. The rulings led the patent holder, Secure Axcess, LLC, to agree that Nintendo’s well-known hand-held systems, including Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS, do not infringe. Secure Axcess is a patent-assertion company that originally filed suit against Nintendo and 11 retailers of Nintendo products in a Texas court in January 2013. Since then the case was transferred to the Washington court, where it has now been dismissed.

“We are very pleased with the court’s rulings and outcome in this case, and will continue to vigorously defend our innovative products against patent lawsuits,” said Devon Pritchard, Nintendo of America’s General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Business Affairs.

In the case against Nintendo that was dismissed on July 17, a federal court judge found that eight of Nintendo’s popular hand-held systems, including the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance systems, do not infringe a patent asserted against those products by Quintal Research Group, Inc.

Before He Was Amazing…He Was SPIDEY!

New Series Within Continuity Starring Teenaged Peter Parker! Today, he’s the world’s greatest super hero. But long before he swung from rooftops as the Amazing Spider-Man, he was just a spider-powered teenager who knew that “with great power must also come great responsibility.” Today, Marvel is pleased to announce SPIDEY #1 – a brand-new ongoing series launching as part of All-New, All-Different Marvel! Follow the adventures of teenaged Peter Parker in a new series set within continuity from rising star writer Robbie Thompson (TV’s Supernatural, Silk) and blockbuster Marvel Young Gun artist Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy)!

“Everyone remembers their FIRST Spider-Man comic,” says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “SPIDEY aims to be perfect as someone’s first Spider-Man comic, or their one thousandth. We’re not looking to re-tell stories here. What Robbie [Thompson] and Nick [Bradshaw] have put together is an exciting new take on Spider-Man at his arguably most iconic incarnation, and will feel fresh to new and old fans alike.”

Class is in session as two of the hottest creators in comics take Peter back to school for a classic and iconic take on the Spider-Man mythology. Familiar faces and new characters populate Peter Parker’s world as he balances his double life as a high school student and the high-flying, web-swinging new hero Spider-Man! “Out of the 700+ issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN” shares Spider-Man Editor Nick Lowe, “Peter Parker was only in high school for thirty issues! Stan and Steve covered a lot, but there’s a lot of the high school and early super hero experience still on the table.”

Iconic villains, a classic supporting cast, the ol’ Parker Luck and more are back! Don’t miss one moment of these bombastic new adventures as Thompson and Bradshaw create a legend of their own when SPIDEY #1 comes to comic shops later this year!
