Local is an interesting graphic novel written by Brian Wood and drawn by Ryan Kelly. It’s a collection of 12 short stories each one taking part in a different North American city. Each of these stories is connected by the character Megan McKeenan. Some stories Megan is front and center as the star others she’s only a background character, but despite this each story does a wonderful job of leading us through her life as she tries to find herself through her travels. The last three chapters were some of the most powerful I’ve read and they pull the whole thing together into a great cohesive novel. It kind of reminded me of an inverted version of my own relationship with my sister and our mother.
Ryan Kelly’s art is phenomenal and he does an amazing job of conveying the characters emotions throughout the series as well as the life of each of the 12 different cities. You can tell a lot of research was done about each of the cities as the detail in each are enough to draw you in and make you feel a part of that cities lifeblood. Each panel of this book has an almost painstaking amount of detail in them; I could swear I walked down that same street in the Brooklyn chapter. Originally published in 2005 from Oni Press I suggest going out to your local comic shops and asking them to order you a copy.

Infinity #2
Hmm, there is a lot of moving pieces in this. Pretty cool how it connects what’s happening in The Avengers and the New Avengers. Marvel in space is pretty cool.
