Movie Review: Unfriended (Cybernatural)

IMDB Storyline: While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. At first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl's computer desktop, CYBERNATURAL redefines 'found footage' for a new generation of teens.

My Thoughts: This movie was originally called Cybernatural and released in 2014. It was renamed "Unfriended" and released in April 2015. This movie is only 82 minutes long and takes place in a Skype chat. You are literally on the main character, Blaire's (Shelley Henning) laptop the entire time. (Easter Egg - You see that Blaire likes watching Teen Wolf - which is a show the actress is on currently) This movie is a great advertisement for Apple. All her friends are on Skype and are being haunted by a classmate that committed suicide. Blaire tries to bargain with the deceased classmate on Facebook but the group of friends find themselves having to reveal their deepest darkest secrets while trying to stay alive. It is filled with simple but fun kills of the characters.

The group is forced to play "Never Have I Ever" and find out a lot about themselves and each other. This movie is a great simple horror movie. Great concept of utilizing a feature that we all use either Skype, Facebook, Google Hangout, FaceTime, etc. We are all so hooked into social media we all forget how easy it is to have that turned against us and points out the bullying aspects of the internet. It also reveals how easy the trolls can be brought to light.

This movie was not heavy on the gore but did well in delivering a horror aspect. I recommend this movie as it is short and sweet and does what it sets out to do. I like that the whole movie takes place on a computer and it is delivered well. Great ending!
