PS4: First Impressions

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share with you some first impressions of the PS4. Sadly I have not won the lottery so I could only afford to buy one system and I went with the other guy. I respect Sony and wanted to share with you what other gamers are seeing with the new Sony console.

Bradford:

Did you do a midnight release? If so how did it turn out?
I did go to a midnight launch at Gamestop. There were about 40 people there with me and we had 2 police officers there (one volunteered because he was also picking up his system last night). It went pretty smooth. Safety was the number one concern at the Gamestop that I went to. They only let 2 people in the store at once and had these huge black bags for the systems to not be so obvious. No events or setup since it was a small store but it was great speaking with cool gamers.

How was the update process?
The update process was a breeze. Downloaded in about 3 mins. That may be due to my internet connection of 75mbps download speed.

How’s the gameplay? What games did you get?
I have Knack, NBA 2K14, Call of Duty Ghosts, and Killzone. I have only tried NBA 2K14 so far and the gameplay is very smooth. It is noticeable improvement from previous Gen and on a game that is on both I think it is a great way to see the improvement.

What are your thoughts on your new system?
The system design is sexy, the speed is great, the new "dashboard" is refine to feel new but also has some elements to remind you that you are on a Playstation.

Any problems or concerns?
I had problems signing in to PSN as soon as I got it home and updated, but when I tried in the morning it worked with no problems. Also I have only started on NBA 2K14 but the install time is horrible and I was not given an option to just play from the disc. I hope that issue is addressed. I have waited about 35-40 mins just to install the game.

Additional Comments?
I hope that Sony will bring over the digital library from the PS3 soon. I had about 85 games on my PS3 and I have not seen an option to get those over to PS4 yet. Also they include a small set of headphones that are reminiscent of a pair that comes with a cell phone. Its nice to have some included and to know that you can use those type of head phones now.

Dorian:

Did you do a midnight release?
Yes I went to the midnight launch. The line wasn't bad. I thought there was going to be a bigger turn out at Gamestop. They had a much larger group of people waiting at best buy.

Additional Comments? Any problems or concerns?
The update process was pretty quick didn't have any problems with that the only problem I had was connecting to the Playstation network to sign in. I kept getting an error message for about an hour and it connected, since then it's been smooth sailing. The system is great, well built. I love the illuminated light that goes across the system. The controller is way better than the dual shock 3. I just didn't like that cheap head mono headset the give but other than that I'm having a great experience so far. I'm loving Battlefield and NBA 2K14. I didn't open the all the other games yet. I'll update you on those later and my gamer tag is blast4me88

Did you do a midnight release? If so how did it turn out?
I did not. I went to Target this morning at 6 AM, for the release at 8 AM. I was third in line. Target has the buy two games get one free special as well, so it just made sense. Target had 18 available to the public, and had 8 pre-orders which was the store's limit. There were around ten or so people that didn't get consoles, however they did not wait long at all.

How was the update process?
The update was seamless. It was also very fast.

How’s the gameplay? What games did you get?
The gameplay is great! Awesome graphics. I bought Battlefield 4, Killzone Shadows Fall, and Need for Speed Rivals for $120! I may go get 3 more.

What are your thoughts on your new system?
It is very fast and I like how you can go to the main PS4 menu when in-game. The sleep mode feature also seems like a great idea, I often leave my Xbox 360 on when I take little breaks and have been craving a low power sleep mode option because of this.

Any problems or concerns?
No everything went smoothly, the online setup and verification of my new account was a little excessive, but in this new generation we do take security very seriously.

Additional Comments?
The PS4 runs very quiet with minor disc reading sounds now and again. I'm sure when I install my discs it will be silent during gameplay.

Did you do a midnight release? If so how did it turn out?
Yes I did attended. It turned out really well, it was well organized and it was a total of 30 people (small city)

How was the update process?
I bought a terabyte hdd so I had to download the 1.50 update to my usb drive. Easy transition.

How’s the gameplay? What games did you get?
I was a little disappointed with Madden there was no "major" difference. But Assassins Creed 4 & Killzone was beautiful.

What are your thoughts on your new system?
I only spent 4 hours on it but it's an easy transition from the PS3

Any problems or concerns?
No

Additional Comments?
Background download is awesome, I played Killzone while the install was downloading.

Did you do a midnight release? If so how did it turn out?
I didn't go to pick up a console, Mine was coming through Amazon, but I did still go to take pictures and help out a few friends stuck in line.  Going to do it all over again this coming week. Its always fun to see a lot of people at a game related event.

How was the update process?
It was quick, I actually downloaded onto USB early in case PSN would have trouble with the new load but ended up not needing it.

How’s the gameplay? What games did you get?
Everything has been running smooth and looks great. Right now I have Killzone: Shadowfall, Blacklight Retribution, Resogun, AC4: Black Flag, DC Universe Online, Knack, Playroom, Warframe and Contrast. KZ is of course beautiful and a solid FPS, AC4 is another great Assassin's Creed game with a new direction and Knack is surprisingly and severely underrated....But Resogun is honestly my favorite. Its pretty intense.

What are your thoughts on your new system?
It's great. Its quiet and even though I've seen one several times, when it's on my entertainment system its surprisingly small and compact. UI is deceptively deep and after having a couple of days with it, I'm honestly most excited for the console's potential. While the controller looks the same, it feels completely different. Remote play is pretty amazing, I just played Resogun at a friends house with my PS4 still at home.

Any problems or concerns?
Other than PSN being down so they can scale up to deal with the server load, none at all.  As I said before, Its pretty quiet, it has never gotten more than warm to the touch and no crashes so far. Its sad that alot of people are having problems. And with social media around these days, you hear of every case of faulty hardware. I was defiantly very worried that mine would have problems but everything seems fine.

Additional Comments?
I wish people could stop fighting over which console is the best and just play their games.
