Movie Review - Kingsman: The Secret Service

IMDB Storyline: Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

My Thoughts: The characters were fun to watch on screen. Eggsy (Taron Egerton) pulled off the smart mouth young adult quite well. Harry Hart (Colin Firth) worked well as the refined super spy that takes the young smart mouth kid under his wings. Mark Hamill was a surprise in this movie. I did not realize he was in it and did not realize even after the movie ended. Maybe if I played closer attention but he did not look like Mark Hamill, I am now concerned for the new Star Wars movie but I guess that is a discussion for another day. Now, the most important role in the whole movie, Valentine played by Samuel L. Jackson. When I first saw the trailers for this movie I was very confused by Jackson's outfit choices in this movie. He looks like a 1996 rapper from New York. Actually he reminds me of Russell Simmons now that I think about it. He has his hat tilt to the side and everything. Then to make it crazier he has a heavy lisp! I was distracted from the movie because of it.

The story overall was fine. I found Valentine as the villain funny and his explanation for world destruction was as kooky as it needed to be. The violence was on an extra level and I can understand why the movie was rated R. There is a moment at the end where the violence goes to a level that I was not even prepared for and you will find yourself giggling. Overall I would say if you love action movies, definitely check it out. If you are looking for a heavy duty classic spy movie then this one really is not for you.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Loved Sam Jackson's villain and the action sequences are shot well. Its like watching the classic Bond movies except its a little more over the top as far as the action is concerned. All in all, fun times at the theater.
